    iMac 20" 2008 - shuts down

    Hello there,

I have an iMac that intermittently shuts itself down. The power supply has been replaced, but the issue is still there. Usually it takes 5 to 30 minutes before it shuts down. After shutdown it instantly restarts again.

I have not been able to stress the shut down - doesnt seem to matter if CPU is fully stressed or idle - it'll shut down anyway.

I have eliminated heat issues, so I was thinking there's a bad capacitor some where on the logic board. I cant see any bulged capacitors, but at least one of the capacitors has a small crack in the paint (meaning it started to bulge?).

Please see attached images, and let me know what more info is needed to further troubleshoot this issue.

    This is the computer in question;

They don't look bad to me.

It still could be a heat issue. Typical with a bad solder joint, when it gets warmed up, it expands and breaks the circuit since there is a crack in the solder.

The majority of those capacitors are polymer (so they won't bulge and won't fail as easily). You could try replacing the SMT electrolytics, but I honestly doubt that is the cause.
If I had to guess, I'd say it's a BGA chip with a bad joint.

The infamous PowerPC G5 towers suffered from BGA problems causing issues like that.

Easiest option would be to buy a new system board. Unfortunately laptops and all-in-one systems are prone to a lot of issues like that.

Your last resort would be buying a BGA rework station or tossing the board in the oven for some baking, erm, reflowing.

I've successfully brought a macbook pro back by using a heat gun on the video processor. Basically wick some thin no clean flux under the suspect chip, wrap the board in foil playing close attention to covering any plastic parts with multiple layers and cut a hole right around the chip you want to heat up. Then get it hot! Macbook in question has been running fine for 3 years since the repair.

The other thing to check would be bad thermal compound on the processor itself. Apple uses crappy thermal paste that can dry out and crack away from the processor. Try replacing that first.

Hi everyone, I would replace the cap showing the stress cracks in the paint. After that I would make sure the board is completely clean and dust and debris. Maybe even going as far as ultrasonic cleaning it and then changing the thermal compound to make sure the chip is not overheating.

iMac A1418 - No LED, no power after overvoltage on Ethernet port
                by ryogadan78
Hi guys, I need your help again.
I have this iMac from a customer that shut down during a storm along with all the other devices in the house. In particular, the router, connected via Ethernet to the iMac, caught fire.
When I removed the screen from the iMac to check the status of the LEDs, I noticed that none of them were lit. I had a perfectly compatible and working power supply, so I tried it right away, but the problem remained the same (no LEDs). With the thermal camera, I noticed only a slight warming (32 degrees) of the NCP1605BG chip on the power supply. The rest was completely...

                iMac M1 DFU restore issue
                by Stephen
iMac turns on no drops no cracks, tried to DFU Restore the iMac, logo turns on great! however iMac turns itself off and then restarts to the (!) icon and won't post the restore. Tried thunderbolt 3 cable, tried regular USB C cable and nothing.

this is the message it gives me with the error

Unexpected device state 'DFU' expected 'RestoreOS' (Probably forced into DFU mode externally) [com.apple.MobileDevice.MobileRestore – 0xFAE (4014)].

Any thoughts what this could be? I will open it up and repair it but I am not 100% sure since this iMac doesn't...

                iMac 27” 2020 Boot issue
                by Stephen
Customer came in for data recovery, came to find out data is soldered on to this iMac (learn something new everyday) this is a 2020 T2 iMac so I was surprised because the iMac Pro has a T2 chip and it isn’t soldered on. Anyways, the iMac boots to Apple logo and then restarts, before it turns off you hear a quarter fan spin then it repeats itself. I decided to do a DFU revive to restore any hardware firmware issues and it was successful in reviving the device however the issue persists in boot looping. It shows the Apple logo for like 40 seconds then turns off and fan spin rinse repeat. I...

After installing old drives now we're having the same problem that the device is in recovery mode. Previously after swap of the SSD iMac worked on the old SSD however after attempt of revive on the new SSD machine stuck in recovery mode, I can go to DFU but the same result with error 4010.
