    Asus P58W-LA motherboard

    Hi all,

    Here is a HP PC m7000/2gb Ram/Ati video card/Pentium D processor socket 775
This the Pc of a friend. Pc keeps turning off/on by itself for ever, he said.
I just got it to have a look. First I cleaned it up. Such dust I have never seen, only from other's pictures. Five years since purchased and never been cleaned.
    I checked:
-video card (replaced with one I have) OK
-Removed all other cards - the same problem
    - removed all Ram memory- a good working motrherboard should have some beeps, this one nothing.
    - Attached my AX750 PSU - the same problem
    - cleared CMOS , no help
    - changed the Hdd, the same problem
The only thing I have not checked is the processor, I have not any to replace it.
This motherboard has a few aluminium capacitors, the others are KZG, I think are from 2005, no sure. I did not remove the mainboard to look closer.
The three capacitors beside CPU, are KZG. No sign of leakage. They look perfect.
I think one of the two are the problem; the motherboard or processor. I tend to believe, based on my previous experience with KZG caps, that is motherboard issue.

What could it be? The KZG capacitors?

    Thanks

I have this exact same motherboard. Mine isn't working with no post, but that is another story.

I wonder if your reset pin is stuck or shorted? This would be pin in the same place where the power on/off pins are.

KZG are a well known problem. They fail often and don't always bloat.

Pretty good chance that's the only problem. [Or at least the biggest.]

You should replace those before you spend a bunch of time on this.
They are probably at least part of the problem and if they are they will hide any other problems.

I don't think I've ever seen the 8mm KZGs bloat, but I often see the 10mm KZGs bloated (Especially the 3300uF ones)... 8mm KZGs should be replaced on sight.

More often they die without bloating though.

            Re: Asus P58W-LA motherboard

            Back with the old problem.
My friend decided to go ahead to fix his PC, his laptop was down too for a week and wants to have the PC done too.
Before replacing the motherboard I changed the 5x KZG 1000 uF 16v with nichicon 1000uF 16v, but it does the same, when turn the pc, all fans start and after a few seconds it turns off.
The motherboard looks OK, no signs of burn… I am thinking what else could be, maybe the chipset Intel P965 burnt? I do not know.
The other capacitors on motherboard are:
            6x polymer 820uF 2.5v
            4x CFJ 1500uF 6.3v
            5x Polymer 471uF 6.3v
            11x KZG 820uF 6.3v
            1x CFJ 470uF 16v
            and a few KZG smaller...

I am thinking to replace the 6x polymer 820uf 2.5 are closed on the left side of processor.
This PC never been cleaned and run till failed, I think were high temps, there are some traces of burn underneath of the motherboard…. (the shape of the heat sink mounting metal plate at the back of motherboard)
What do you guys think, to go ahead to change some more capacitors or throw it away.
            Thanks

the ones that are on the VERY left side of the CPU were replaced? They look like nichis in the picture, is this a picture of post replacement or pre replacement? Which nichicons did you replace them with?

also, I notice a nichicon next to the northbridge, This is a 775 board probably from 04-05 within the bad nichicon manufacturing time range

Yes, it is post replacement. I replaced the KZG 16v 1000uF 8mm with Nichicon HN 16v 1000uF 10X16mm, five of them on left side of the CPU.
                The Nichicon HN(M) 16v 1000uF 10X16mm I bought them a year ago.

what about this one? it looks like an original board nichicon. Remember any 01-05 HP and dell boards have a chance of bad nichicons

edit: nevermind, looking at the other picture I can see its a panasonic. But the 3 below are KGZ's and I think part of the northbridge VRM, you might want to consider replacing those

I do not know which once you are talking about. Maybe some of the 11x KZG 820uF 6.3v
I have lots of Nichicon HM 1000uF 6.3v, can I use them to replace some of the KZG 820uF 6.3v?

....Those three you are talking about?:
                    1x 16v 100uF KMG
                    2x 16V 220uF Radial KMG

                    KMG = United Chemi-Con ?
I noticed that in spite of the same colour which is the same as KZG, there are smaller once as KMG...

Can you just remove the heatsink and renew thermal paste ?

As I said, everything else is OK, hardware point of you.
I am saying this because now I replaced it with FOXCONN 45CMX, a fellow had a few of them new, sealed, never used.
I got it, installed Windows 7, and everything is fine now.

So the motherboard is the problem. I am still trying to fix it, to change a few more capacitors, if is not going to work, I will remove the capacitors I have replaced and throw it away.

FOXCONN 45CMX is not that strong built as the Asus P58W-LA, but as long as is working finem it is alright.

Have you tried to place a new 3V CR2032 BIOS-battery? I don't see that step in your startpost.
In my experience those battery's last 4-6 years. If the voltage is below 3.00 volts it's as good as empty (according to various Lithium CR2032 datasheet's).
Especially Asus-board's can show such strange behavior with an almost empty battery, sometimes the board looks just plain 'dead'. Or the normal/usual bios-settings-reset behavior as it is with other manufacturers.

Here’s another motherboard that needed a full recap: an ASUS P5GC-MX.
This one was gifted to me some years ago by user Pentium 4, along with a few other goodies. It actually came in working order with no bulging or leaking caps. However, I noted there were United Chemicon KZG caps everywhere on the motherboard. The CPU VRM output (CPU V_core) was the only exception: it had only 2x KZG. The rest was 6x UCC TMV 4V 680 uF caps… which aren’t any good news either.

So here is what the motherboard looked like with its original caps:

Hello everyone, I wanted to ask you for some advice, I have this Asus card that is giving me problems, with the thermal camera I detected some components that are getting very hot, I removed a component that was short-circuiting but I still have the super I/O that is getting very hot, can something be done to fix it? Thanks to everyone for any advice...

ASUS Zephyrus GA401I Severe Lag, Suspect Motherboard/Power Issue - Need Help Diagnosing
                                by MakNCheese
                                Hi everyone,

I'm having a serious issue with my ASUS Zephyrus GA401I (4 years old, worked perfectly until recently). The system is lagging heavily, even in the BIOS, and is charging extremely slowly (a few percent in hours), making it nearly unusable. I suspect a motherboard or power delivery issue.

                                Symptoms:
                                • Severe lag across the system, including BIOS navigation.
                                • Slow boot times and unresponsive performance in Windows.
                                • Battery charges very slowly (e.g., ~5% in 2–3 hours).
                                • No error messages or BSODs, just extreme sluggishness.

                                What I've Tried:
                                • Replaced
                                ...
