Abit AA8 Bad Caps...replacement advice needed

    Hello all,
I stumbled across this forum a couple of days ago...good stuff.

I've got an old Abit AA8 that's acting up for no apparent reason. It's covered in mostly Rubycon caps, but there are (7) KZG caps on it. Of the (7) KZG caps, (3) are obvioulsy bad (bulging tops).

The (3) bulging caps are like the first two photos. (They have a 3O on one side of them)...I believe that is the letter O and not the number 0.

These next two photos are of some of the others that don't show sign of being bad...they have a 3P on them.

Some advice of what caps to use to replace them would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Cap

Replace all the KZG capacitors, even those that aren't bloating.

    Badcaps.net sells some replacements:

    https://www.badcaps.net/store/produc...products_id=62
    https://www.badcaps.net/store/produc...roducts_id=137

Both of these capacitors exceeds the specifications of the original. If you source capacitors elsewhere, you want to make sure they have adequate ripple handing and low enough ESR. For reference, the specs for your particular KZG are:

    6.3V 2200uF
    Size: 10mm x 20mm
    Ripple: 2550 mA
    ESR: 0.013 ohms

When selecting a replacement, you want the same or more ripple, and the same or less ESR.

It appears that United Chemicon KZG series commonly fail with high temp cases.

Looks like I would go for Nichicon HZs.

        HZ is a little overkill.

        GC is more than enough.

I bought the HZ's a couple of hours ago (before I saw this post)...am I still alright?

Topcat is discontinuing the stocking of Samxon caps.

More likely with the HZs being low in price.

KZG spec-wise is roughly the same as HZ, IIRC.

No, KZG is similar to Nichicon HM. HN is lower ESR and HZ is lower again. But the HZs should be fine as replacments for the KZGs on CaptNasty's board.

The new HZ's came in...the KZG's came off...the new HZ's went on...the board went back in the case aaaand it posted right out of the gate! I stress tested the cpu and memory for a 12 hrs each...no problems at all. I even managed a little overclock.

It looks like my kiddo's gonna get a new rig (or hand-me-down rig) after all.

                      Thanks for the help, folks!!

I'm seeking help in another thread here and thought I'd stop in here with an update:

This motherboard is still running strong!

                        Again, thanks for the help.

I know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.

For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

                          Hello,

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

My mother may soon need to upgrade from Win7 (to continue safe browsing, e-mail, and office tasks, without a printer). Right now, she uses an Intel Core2Quad 9550 CPU (not sure of motherboard). Video is either the Radeon 6670 or 6770, completely air-cooled, with fins like a motorcycle engine (I think I pointed a 120mm fan at it). PSU is probably Seasonic, still running after 14 years (I choose quality). I am not sure of the RAM, or the PCI-e wifi chip. Probably 8 GB or 16 GB. Perfect for WIndows 7.

She does not want to switch to Linux. And she does not want to use a laptop because...

                          Hello!

I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.

The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.

I have studied the board and...

TV Samsung UE55HU8500L (2014) – service menu + firmware reflashing advice needed
                          by Robby-Gr
                          Hi all,

I’m trying to recover a Samsung UE55HU8500L (curved UHD, 4K model from 2014) after replacing the panel. The new panel is a 55A1UU8EH, which produces excellent image quality — very close to the original.

However, since the swap, the TV enters a boot loop (Samsung logo → restart) unless I enter the service menu and perform a reset.

The service mode had been previously modified — possibly by a technician or during the panel swap — and I suspect some key settings are mismatched for the European (Greece) market.

                          Additional issues:...
