help anyone about MSI board

i had a transistor in my MSI board which had a hole in it i think its burned or something, its Model is C5001, where can i get one of these or what is a good substitute???

This mosfet that is marked "C5001" with an "R" underneath is located between the 1st DDR slot and the CPU socket, and is the cause of the premature failures that I experienced, and has been confirmed by multiple readers who had similar problems.

Hi wonder_step!

Seems like you are dealing with an BJT, C5001 is most probably 2SC5001 low Vce(sat) NPN transistor supplying voltage for the memory.

And luckily I have managed to recover some of the data that was almost totally wiped out from my HDD, found a pdf file and here's a link, check out page 13:

2SC4669 is given as replacement for the 2SC5001 but I would try to find the original or better, hard to say what caused the death of your C5001.

Actually this board was from a friend of mine he just gave it to me and he said it wasnt working anymore and when i checked it, i saw that the c5001 had popped... maybe it overheated or something...

Well, the 3,3V can deliver quite a big amount of current so even if the linear regulator (2SC5001) is set to 2,5 it will have to dissipate a lot of power if there is a short. Can you see if there is any IC close by the transistor, they might use same controller IC as in the data sheet.
Power that the 2sc5001 has to dissipate is Vin(3,3V)-Vout(2,5V)xIc
Are this transistor shorted?

nope these transistors werent shorted, my friend just said that this board just died and when he gave it to me i saw that this transistor already had a hole in it....

anyways are there other transistors i can replace other than the 2sc4669 or 2sa1834???
because these components arent available here in my place.....

Seems like the 2SD2118 got same package (CPT3) as 2SC5001 but 2SD2118 has only Ic 5A compared to 10A for the original, I'm not sure how much current a DDR draw someone else on this forum probably know. Think we need to know what kind of controller they use on your motherboard, backtrack from the base of 2SC5001.

Often, Japanese types leave out the "2S" on the package, because there is not enough space to put it on without making the type number hard to read. As said later, this is a 2SC5001.

Isn't this MSI 845 Ultra (MS-6398) board? I just got one with exactly the same transistor burnt and shorted (maybe someone inserted memory module backwards? or bad design?)
Its base is driven by DRV2 ping of Intersil HIP6501A controller (near ATX power connector). I'll replace the transistor but I'm afraid that the chipset might be fried.

Have you found where to buy the original or did you find replacement for the 2SC5001?
Hard to say what will happen if the 2SC5001 gets shorted but if the price for the transistor isn't that high just try to replace it.
Cost for the controller IC HIP6501A is around $2 so why not give it a shot?

I searched boards from my death-pile but was unable to find any suitable NPN transistor for replacement - so I'll need to buy a new one.
The problem with most of the VRM controllers and other specialised chips is not the price but availability.

Replaced with 2SC3420 - from CPU power of dead Socket 7 PC Chips board. The package is different so it needed some "modding" But it works. The specs are not as good as 2SC5001 (especially collector current) but it does not heat up anyway.

Ha, what coincidence!
I shorted that transistor myself on an MSI board (branded Compaq Evo) by stupidly wedging the DDR RAM in the wrong way around.
After some research, I discovered the transistor with a hole to be indeed a 2SC5001R manufactured by Rohm in Japan.
And I have found a local supplier in Germany, Reichelt Elektronik, who still stocks the item. Yay!
I shall be able to report at the end of the week whether I was able to replace the transistor with a crack and a white hole in it with the spare.
I just hope that no other parts got damaged during the burnout.
