ECS nForce3-A: hot capacitor, brand new.

This mobo has a KLS brand cap that runs very hot, over 60C in 24C surrounding air (I checked two mobos for this), and maybe should be changed to a Japanese one.

It's C419, 1000uF, 6.3V, located at the front corner of the chipset heatsink, next to MOSFET Q51, (PHB55N03LTA, drops 3.3V to 1.6V), which reaches 90C. I'm also heatsinking this MOSFET.

OTOH the caps for the CPU voltage regulator all seem to be Matsushita/Panasonic.

The cap is probably heated by the MOSFET. Maybe the MOSFET is used in linear voltage regulator? I've seen this on some board.

Sounds like it could be the AGP Vreg then.. If you have an old 2X card in there, it'll output +3.3V, and with newer cards in there, it'll output ~1.5V. I suppose it could also be Vcore for the NF3 chipset, but that's usually implemented as a switcher, and i think Vcore for the NF3 is also ~1.5V, so that's a possibility too.

This MOSFET is located in front of the AGP slot, but I left the slot empty because I was using an old PCI graphics card so I could get a fairly accurate measure of the CPU power consumption. This mobo has no switching regulators, except for the CPU.

The last time I had a good capacitor run this hot was with an old 300 MHz Celeron mobo with a MOSFET in its switching regulator for the memory running at 90C (outside case). Gluing a heatsink to to the MOSFET cooled it to 70C. No bulging capacitors yet in that mobo.

BTW I was wrong about the capacitor being KLS brand. It's OST but also marked KLS.

They generally are OST... My ECS/PCChips boards are well populated with them...

If it's a good board for you, recap it... I'm not recapping my PCChips board, the online NIC is busted, not worth it now IMHO...

How do you test MOSFET in laptops ?
            by Jane
I tried to use this method:

            Testing an N-channel MOSFET:

Step 1: Discharge the Gate (turn off the MOSFET)
Place the black probe (COM) on the Source (S) and the red probe on the Drain (D). The multimeter should show no continuity (high resistance or "OL" – open line).
Then, touch the black probe to the Source (S) and the red probe to the Gate (G). This discharges any stored charge in the Gate, turning the MOSFET off.

Step 2: Charge the Gate (turn on the MOSFET)
Now, place the red probe on the Gate (G) and the black probe on the

Changing mosfet different brand same value
            by julianmustofa
Hi.. i got a laptop with shorted highside mosfet
            its NTMFS4C06N 30V/69A
            i only have SM4336NSKP 30V/65A laying arround
it is okay to change with different brand?
i just worried its not compatible with pwm controller. The pwm controller is RT8819AGQW
            thanks...

            RTX 3080 FE Identifying capacitor
            by Prolog
Hi people, I hope this is the correct spot to post this, I'm new to the forum.

I have an RTX 3080 Founders Edition which has a burnt up capacitor (it was in parallel with another capacitor which appears damaged too), so I am hoping to be able to identify the capacitor values and order replacements.

I hope these photos make it clear which component I am referring to:
(yes, the soldering is a bit botched from removing the blown one, I know)

I have found the board schematic (attached), but there does not seem to be a boardview available. I have never...

VGA MOSfet permanently shorted and loss of MOSfet pad
            by Nooy
Hello everyone, I recently found this badcaps site and super Learn Electronics Repair youtube channel. And I wanted to learn how to troubleshoot power supplies and VGA cards and how to practice soldering, since I already have a properly defective piece of them. I am currently trying to solve two problems:

I have a Gigabyte GV-RX460WF2OC-4GD type card. I managed to find the faulty MOSfet (AON6414A) on it, which I replaced. The card starts up, but after about half a minute, the MOSfet in the same position will be shorted again. Is it possible that the PWM controller driving the MOSfet...

If I replace with inferior capacitor, Is it No harm to other IC components at all?
            by chth96
I replaced some capacitor which is located on optical pickup pcb which is shown in the table below(PCB #2).Because it have been out of order.
Now,It works very well,But I just have found that all caps (6svpc100my and other part number as well) ,which is shown in the table below, has ultra-high ripple current spec.
It is not able to obtain any capacitor which can be a substitute for this ultra-high ripple current nichicon capacitor.
So I replaced it with samxon and rubycon's general capacitor(GP,YXA series).
I know that these capacitor will not last as long as nichicon capacitor...
