    HP / Asus ptgd1-la bad caps, wont boot with replacements

    I had a typical motherboard issue with an HP yesterday where a few of the filter caps were blown. The PC still booted fine but was obviously very unstable. I have removed the three blown caps and replaced them with the same values. Problem is, with the new caps in, the PC will refuse to power on. The CPU fan moves for a second then the power supply shuts off. Something is going on with that 12v rail. I can remove the caps, and the machine powers on fine again. Plug just 'one' of the three caps in (doesnt matter which) and it refuses to power again. I've attached a pic of what I'm talking about. I've done this literally 100's of times and this is the 1st one I've had do this.

    remember that asus and asrock have the positive side marked on the board, unlike all the other manufacturers which do it the standard way (negative side marked)..

      OMG. I can't believe I didn't think of that. You can even look at the other caps and see that. Thank you! That did it.
