ASUS 8800GT Graphics Card Missing Cap. Need Identified.

Okay, I know it's not a motherboard, but I assume same principle here. I figure you guys are the pros at this.

Got this GPU as a refurb item (my first at that). Darn thing came with a cap completely "incapacitated" .

Anyways, can anyone tell me what cap I will need and where to get? Stopped by Radio Shack on my way home earlier just to look, but now I've been reading on here that I may need Low ESR? Dont really know much here and any help would greatly be appreciated. TIA...

Also have a thread on Tom's Hardware with more info: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/fo...0&new=0&nojs=0

Assuming the missing capacitor is the same as the one next to it, it's a 16V 270uF polymer capacitor. The one in question is made by Fujitsu, which is now FP-CAP. Unfortunately, I don't know how to determine the series. So, we'll err on the safe side and go for the better rated 8mm diameter polymer caps. Here are two options for replacement capacitors:

    http://search.digikey.com/scripts/Dk...me=493-3018-ND

As this is a polymer capacitor, replacing it with another polymer capacitor is the way to go. Replacing it with a wet electrolytic capacitor with inferior specs would not be a good idea. Polymer capacitors are extremely low ESR. Radio Shack won't carry anything that will work for this application.

both of these caps are the same. verified with a quick google image search (gotta love those hardware review sites with 2+mp pics )

as for the cap value, fujitsu caps like that use a scheme like this

      [fujitsu logo][datecode?]
      [capacitance value][number of zeroes]
      [voltage]

      271 would be 27 with 1 zero, so 270uF
      561 would be 56 with 1 zero = 560uF
152 would be 15 with 2 zeroes = 1500uF (i just made that up as an example. dunno if 1500uF fujitsu polys exist with this labelling scheme)
      ...

strange way of marking these, especially since the values for polymer caps don't really go that high.. and other manufacturers also print the "normal" value on their polys..

Thanks fellas! You all really sound like you know what your talking about.

@yyonline: I have ordered some with the link you have provided. Thx!

@scenic: Thanks for showing me the way they code these things. I was baffled.

Now I hope I just dont f*#$ up the soldering once I get the new ones. Will be a first for me!

Installed cap. Still doesnt work. Tried many different times. Even baked it. Still no avail. Could it be that a resistor is missing? Look under where the cap was missing and it looks like maybe a third resistor (?) maybe not present. Or is it supposed to look like that? TIA.

P.S. It will make it through POST and windows 7 boot screen, but fails at login screen. Safe mode works though.

The missing resistor is left off deliberately. If it broke off, the solder pads wouldn't be rounded as they are.

Unfortunately video cards are complex beasts, with many possible points of failure, the GeForce 8 series, especially so, as they had some sort of manufacturing defect with the GPUs. I never took the time to fully research it, so I won't try to explain the technical details.

Does the picture become distorted at all, or is it a hard lock situation? Blue screen? Reboot? I'm assuming you have the correct drivers installed. The 8800GT is a power hungry card. Do you have a sufficient power supply? Keep in mind the card uses less power displaying lower resolutions such as the windows boot screen and safe mode. Have you tried the card in a different computer to rule out some sort of motherboard issue?

No distortion, just loss of video signal completely (Black screen, monitor into standby). I do have correct drivers. I have an EXACT identical card already running, so power supply and different mobo could be ruled out. Actually the working card is Rev 1.00 and the faulty refurb one is 1.01. I swap the cards to the same PCI-X slot, same monitors plugged in same outputs. Tried many different ways also.

Guess just not going to work. Think I'll cut my losses and get a 460gtx 1gb or maybe a 560gtx ti.

Thank you very much for all the great info and help.

I have an MSI 8600 GTS that does the same. Shows bios info for 3 seconds and then goes into standby mode: https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=10193

I guess nothing can be done.

You've put the cap on with the correct orientation, remembering that ASUS likes backwards silkscreens?

It looks like that cap/resistor/diode might have been there, there's cross hatching and the solder pads don't look perfect.
