Recapping Asus Board with Cool Stack

Does anyone have any tips on how to properly remove the capacitors that are attached to the cool stack board on my Asus P5AD2-E Premium board? I've been trying for about an hour now to get the bad caps out, but I just can't get the solder to melt completely around the leads. I wicked out the top layer on the cool stack board itself, but it looks like there's another layer on the actual motherboard underneath. I have a 40 watt Weller iron with the base cranked all the way up. I was able to remove the other caps that aren't attached to this cool stack with no troubles at all.

Higher power iron and larger(wider) tip and use just the corner. Mine is a 3/16" wide, 800°F tip that does okay. None do well as these are through 2 circuit boards. Heat the other side of the board with a hair dryer to assist you, and leave it running while you work. Flux and add solder to each joint to increase the heat conduction.

The Cool Stack works well, no?

Which ones are you trying to remove?

VCore is Panasonic FL, and VRM is Ruby MBZ. They're fine.
The one ringer is an OST 1500uF that looks like a Ruby (same purple sleeve) on the corner of the CPU area towards the RAM. All the Ltec 820uF have to go.

Process for removing caps from multilayered PCBs:
          1) Apply flux to the pins
          2) Apply a little solder to each pin
          3) Heat one pin andwith your hand underneath rock the cap back and forth while heating each side

Adding solder to the pin adds surface area for the heat to contact and melt the solder. Take your time and be patient, don't let the iron slip and damage the traces.

You don't need a high powered iron, any 25 watt junk iron can do this.

            NOT!

Too low of watts and you are heating the whole PCB slowly vice just the joint quickly.

Beyond the fact it will take FOREVER to melt the solder you are highly likely to burn the pads right off the board.
            .

Some people get by with a 40 watt but even that is too 'light' for most people.
For most people the sweet spot is the 50-60 watt range.

Not correct for multilayer boards. Definitely not correct for -this- board in -this- area. It is TWO boards under the CPU/VRM area with a small gap in between (think 1 piece of paper). It's heavily plated and double sided.

Fortunately the only caps that probably need replacement are those I mentioned in Post 2, the "ringer" OST and the Ltec's.

As a testament to my success, I write to you this message on a Soltek 848P board where I had to do just this. I had to replace around 10 capacitors with Sanyo equivalents. Judging by the newfound stability of my system, the job was a success. I did this when I had a 25 watt iron. I now use a 35 watt iron, and while it isn't easy to do, it is quite possible. It just needs some patience, but in my opinion, it is certainly worth it - that is - not having to purchase a relatively expensive iron.

I also recap Dell GX240s all the time with excellent results.

My iron is generic, and my electronics store miraculously carried the obscure thread-in bits which are out of production.

When 60W iron in the shop costs few bucks more than 25W one, saving money really falls out of question once you encouter problems

Also 1000W heat gun helps heaps.

Are you using Chipquik or some other very low temperature solder? Because 25W is barely enough for desoldering single-layer boards, and I've had problems desoldering DIP chips from double-layer boards with less than 40W. I've found that the Radio Shack 45W desoldering iron, modified to minimize heat loss (insulate the top, cut the pipe to the sucker bulb), can do 4-layer boards.

No, I'm not using chipquick. Your problem is your flux is weak. I use plumbing flux with my 25 or 35 watt irons and I have no problems. I can even desolder large coils from multi-layered boards. The 35-watt I found in the trash. If this hobby makes me a million dollars someday, I might consider investing in one of those overpriced irons, but until then, I refuse to pay.

                            25 watts won't do it.

It has, and it does. In fact, I have four Dell GX240 boards I need to recap. I think I'll order a bunch of Samxon from Topcat for this one. Just yesterday I had to replace a GX240 board with blwon Nichicons, and the replacement I soldered is working fantastically.

If you want pictures, I'll be glad to oblige.

I don't use "massive amounts" - nowhere enough to cause damage to the PCB screen. Just a little dab on the joint - enough to encourage some melting - and I have stuff I recapped with this method working for years now. When I get the caps I'll do it.

Might work with a big 25W iron, which takes 10 minutes to warm up and has enough heat capacity to do (a quick) job.

But personally, I use 45W iron which is registers as 65W (240 instead of 220V)
