    Adaptec SCSI 39160 Recap?

I've got six or so of these cards that do not detect the harddrive on startup.

In looking at them carefully, I see a mixture of SMT caps. The blue-banded ones have an ESR of about .26, the others are all 4.5!

I am thinking that somebody used the low-ESR ones as replacements at one time. Thing is, I bought some 16v 10uf SMT caps, and they are new and have ESR of 3.5!

Lowest ESR I have seen is Digikey - they have some that are .85.

You can see by the damaged card photo what happens if you are not really careful - the traces, which are foil and maybe glued to the surface of the card, tear right off.

Labelling of the non-blue caps as follows: L2P 10 16V, 10 CFC AD1, 10 CFC 5T7 and 10 CFC A53. I am assuming these are all variations of the same thing and are all 10uf 16V.

Has anyone here ever repaired any of these? Are the caps likely to be the problem with the "invisible drive" problem. Any suggestions for SMT cap removal & replacement. They get pretty hot when you are removing them.
I routinely add new solder before trying to detach them.

remove with hot air, replace with tantalum.

I've never tried repairing one because I've never seen one actually go bad. I have a few of them laying around here, I use them to test and/or low-level format SCSI HDD's.

Don't remove them. For testing purposes tack another capacitor with long leads in parallel. If the card starts working then you can decided how much work you want to go through to make the card look original. Unless the original cap is shorted the new cap will shoulder the entire load.

smd electrolytics shouldnt be replaced by electrolytics - they are undersized crap - look at the datasheets!
they are the cheap option instead of tantalum or even large ceramics.
