    Syslog your firewall friend

    Most of you own router/firewalls
do they come with syslog options?
    the better ones do yes.

How would you like to capture that stuff automatically?
udp port 514 is your new friend
just configure your pc to capture it into a log!
then without even going to your browser to gui login to your router/firewall you can open the log and there you go!

or if you are a linux person just set an option in syslog and then syslog.conf set the debug.info to your firewall.log file

thank you for making a topic where you ask and answer your own questions

pfsense supports external syslog servers, which I would prefer in cases where pfsense is installed on flash media (like a CF ide card and such)

Why does my ISP router hate my "homemade" power supply??
            by double_DD
            Hi all,

It's gonna be a long intro, so please buckle in, as it's a problem that's been bugging me for several days now. Thanks in advance.

So, I have 2 modems/routers, whatever the proper nomenclature is, one from ISP and one mine. I want to power them via USB-C rather then their original mains adapters (for reasons, that are hard to explain to sane people). Both routers come with 12V/3A mains adapters.
For this purpose I acquired USB-C charger with 250W and 5 ports, 2 of which can supply max 20V/3A. Since 12V isn't a standard PD voltage option (and to future proof,...

Hardware firewall to block ad servers?
            by Hondaman
I found an interesting summary on a wiki that Youtube "right to repair" enthusiast Louis Rossman put up. He suggested I could use a hardware firewall and pfSense as a firewall, and use pfSenseNG as an ad blocker. Or use OPNSense as a similar alternative. Seems like it would be easy to set up, but it only runs on the hardware supported by BSD. (I'm sure the developers and maintainers of BSD are super-busy and cannot support every single piece of hardware out there, so I can't fault them.)

The trick, apparently, is to "assign IP address lists from sites like I-blocklist...

UPNP, "Standards" and hardware that implements it
            by EasyGoing1
I've been writing a program in Java that is really just a robust front end for the use of GitHiub Gists, providing a nice interface for developers to organize, maintain and access code snippets that we tend to need from time to time in our different projects.

One of the features of the program is the ability for people to share their Gists with others who use the program over a LAN or over the Internet. The program just basically serializes a Java class and encrypts it then wraps it into a UDP datastream and sends it over to another user.

So I decided to implement UPNP...

Friend messed up my laptop motherboard while working on my bench
            by Geeker007
            Hi All,

So my friend was visiting and he wanted to use my solder bench to solder on some WLED circuit board. My laptop was open on the side for RAM upgrade. I know my mistake.

So while soldering he had too much solder on the soldering iron tip and he just shook off the soldering iron on the table itself to remove extra solder on the soldering tip and it landed on the motherboard of laptop. He then out of fear tried to remove it using solder wick and did more damage by removing some components as well. So here I am with weird situation.

            I have not tried putting...
