Re: Dual or triple firewalls?
ipcop is good, i have a 1.5ghz moble intel celeron on a slim/micro pc with a 2.5inch 3gb laptop hdisk from...1997...
yeah you know those "upgrade" cpu on laptops you do... what to do with the spare cpu? throw it in another handme down junk pc
also it has one single pci slot which i put a second 10/100 fast ethernet low profile card + the onboard
one in, one out
sure it adds .ms of latency
but at the speed of light who can complain when a device checks the packets and source?
i'll have...

Dual or triple firewalls?
ok the modem always has a firewall now right?
then you have a real firewall behind that
which goes out to your beloved unsecured wireless connection
so, how do you make them all happy and work together?
NETWORKING!!!
anyone using 192.168.. should be shot
you can still use 192 but really why? it just makes it easier for backtrack4 to get you
oh whats that? you have a verison tower wireless modem with WEP128 encryption?
guess that will take me about 2 hours of sitting in my car next to your house to crack...

Syslog your firewall friend
Most of you own router/firewalls
do they come with syslog options?
the better ones do yes.
How would you like to capture that stuff automatically?
udp port 514 is your new friend
just configure your pc to capture it into a log!
then without even going to your browser to gui login to your router/firewall you can open the log and there you go!
or if you are a linux person just set an option in syslog and then syslog.conf set the debug.info to your firewall.log file

Re: Oh No! AMD adopts Intel's pinless design
intel motherboards cost way more than amd motherboards
intel cpu costs way more than amd cpu
for surfing the internet a defective x3 amd 720 works for me
compared to... either a dual or a quad I# with a $300 motherboard all uselessly tricked out
hell they dont even have a serial port for my programmer!!!
er i mean
PCI IS DEAD!!!
and um... NO IDE? NO FLOPPY???

Re: Firefox and Broadband users, READ THIS!!
lol thats way better than what IE does which is default 10% of your entire hard disk
as a pc fixer i tend to find drives literally where each user has nearly 10gigs of IE temp files..........
each user........
on a 120gig drive
yeah, leave it at 50
when i see that stuff in IE i immediately lower it to measly 8mb and give it back to the user that way when im done......

Re: HDD test apps.
best and easiest to get:
hirens boot cd 9.9 or up
it has everything and usually always works
oops.. did i just leak some important tricks for the pc repair guy that didnt know how to install windows XP OEM home using a XP pro corp key?
well there you go
and yea, i got plenty more
but believe me everyone...
hiren's boot cd has basically been the cd i have everywhere
but never LEAVE anywhere....
because its dangerous for the noob

Re: Dell Class Action in New York Times
yeah i was surprised to hear about that through my tech news sites as if it was just discovered
apparently people that dont know anything it takes awhile for some things to occur
what with recession, oil, war going on... who needs to report real business fiascos...
ny times just rehashed what everyone was talking about 5 years ago so they could claim they published it first

Re: Firefox.. WTF?!
linux recently discovered a trojan for an irc uploaded to an ftp in nov 2009
recently discovered
this "trojan" attacked linux users
i believe it was packed in an rpm
either way, youre not really that safe
i have never had problems with firefox in the sense of memory bloat or leaks
i do tend to have 10+ windows open because i hate tabs
in linux it does crash a bunch, im not sure if that is caused by other things
but as long as it remembers the pages i had open!
unless...

Linux penguin -- Best, comment, rage.
So I searched for "linux" to see if any purely linux topics showed up.
I found none in the first 3 pages
Heres one:
discuss your experience with linux!
which distro is the best?
what sites do you frequent for linux updates, info, news?
and whats the best desktop that you like the most??
For me its RedHat - or any derivative of that (centos)
I started with Xfce but have moved to gnome for compatiblity with all distros.
What are your complaints besides gaming and...

Re: Geocities go bye-bye
i dumped geocities back in 2001
and i dumped yahoo mail in 2008 for gmail
in 1997 geocities was the rage
well... now im on x10hosting
and i couldnt be happier with gmail googleadsensing my email for ads......
well, thats why i have firefox w/ adblock, noscript, requestpolicy

Re: Counterfeit Nichicons
datecodes can be wrong... do the little warehouse guys performing tasks on the machine even speak english??
trust me, warehouse people generally dont care if they get anything done correctly
and if they were intentionally faking it, they would tend to care even less!

Re: Opinions on "ultra durable" Gigabyte boards?
buying quality/performance boards of older motherboard cpu designs is difficult
almost all of them will be used prior to 2003/4
i have an amd socket a with a barton core 400mhz fsb
finding a great performance motherboard to pair with it is impossible short of spending high costs vs a brand new system
so i am stuck with my soyo kt400 dragon platinum....
which by itself is great except for the cheap capacitors on it
which i have inspected twice for any noticable damage

Re: Acer AL2423W LCD Monitor - Bad caps
man i love hearing about this!
though the OP i am simply amazed you found rubycon and UCC in a "new" monitor
my bet is it was 4 years old, it was already worked on once before
it seems there are 3 or 4 of this psu/ inverter here in the forums with the same pcb boards
mine is acer x241w sd mid 2007
all the luck to everyone who comes across them in the cheap junk bin
because i did not check everything it seems i have some other problems
and now fixing it isnt...

Re: ACER AL2423W - no display
hooray, another monitor that can use my junked compnents from an acer x241w

also a blown fuse on the backlight inverter
replaced the bad caps on the controller board (vga) the capXcon and taepo on the power board, and the 3 bad capacitors and the fuse on the backlight inverter
however after all this fun still no backlight when i fixed it all together
as i was getting a flashlight the backlight inverter sparked and flamed up a U chip

Re: Replacing caps on acer x241w learning experience...
hey, sorry to relive this experience
ive been surfing for the acer x241w "repair" suggestions
yes same symptoms, menu "no signal" even though it gave signal, (says no signal but is showing the desktop) periodic black screens then it worked fine
finally it gave up and went all black
it sat awhile and was donated to me to fix as i fixed several GX270/280 dells and a dell 18inch monitor before
i had the same problem, blown caps
or so i thought...
