Linksys WRT54G version 1 Wireless Router Trouble

I'm over at a family members house troubleshooting there network for them and I cannot even login to the router webpage to see what failed but it's still broadcasting it's SSID no problem but when I type in the correct WPA key for the network it rejects it no matter what.

But when I connect via a Ethernet Cable to my laptop, there desktop PC or my Grandma's Laptop it will just say in Windows Xp (desktop) Limited or no Connectivity and in Windows 7 on her laptop it say No Internet Access and this is for the wired connection.

If I attempt to connect to wireless on this router it won't even accept the WPA key that was I programmed into it.

Now the other day they had a major power failure due heavy rain which blew a transformer down the street.

But for right now this family member who is my grandma is using my old Netgear WGR614 wireless g router which I've set up with a different SSID and WPA key.

If anyone can help that would be great I hope I don't have to buy a new router for them.

The Router in question is a Linksys WRT54g Version 1 and it's only Wireless G at 54Mbits and runs at 2.4ghz.

If anyone has any ideas what is going on with their linksys router that would be great.

Reset it back to factory defaults and re-enter all your settings again.

I'll see about doing a factory restore on it tomorrow when I've got time but thank you so much for the information I've got the router in question on my work table so when I get time tomorrow I can do it at home and be able to test it out.

While you are at it, you should upgrade to the latest Linksys code or consider running dd-wrt.

Funny thing was is I just considering running dd-wrt on this thing.

I might just keep this router running the linksys code just for ease of setting this router up again.

I'm also going to change the router ip address on this thing to it will no longer be the default ip address.

its a WRT54G. Put a bullet through it now. Those are the worst POS routers in existence. When I was a volunteer at goodwill and saw those in bins of those things people threw away for working right. sometimes it would stop working on some adapters, some it would keep working. Its the biggest POS router i've even seen (at&t's grey/white 2wire is better on its own, if you ignore the common problems with the power adapter)

the the 54GL, on the other hand is one of the best. the 54GS is ok. You can get a GL on newegg for $49

Re: Linksys WRT54G version 1 Wireless Router Trouble

I know they are not the greatest routers in the world but speaking of goodwill that's where I got it from.

And I just did a factory reset on it and it made no difference.

So yeah I'm going shopping for a new router I'm going to buy a Netgear wndr3700 for my grandparents.

but I agree with you about the WRT54G being a junk router

I have 3 of these routers in various hw revisions all running stock Linksys code and never had a problem. I got them all used too.

they seem to be glitchy till recapped and dd-wrt installed.then they are bulletproof.
i have done hundreds of the wrt54g units and the only ones to come back buggy were hit by lightning.
                  iirc the v1 uses a 5v psu.

I decided not to scrap my linksys wrt54g I just got it working this morning I had to do the factory reset on it again and I'm going to leave the linksys software on there for testing then I'm going to run dd-wrt on it after I test the router out to make sure it doesn't lock up again..

Personally I loved Tomato firmware on the WRT54G series routers when I used to have a WRT54GS v1.1 router. It was incredibly stable and easy to use. Many say it is a lot better than DD-WRT (personally never used DD-WRT for an extended period of time besides my WRT320N which I only use as an access point and not as a router).

It is sure worth having a look at at least.

Why does my ISP router hate my "homemade" power supply??

                        Hi all,

It's gonna be a long intro, so please buckle in, as it's a problem that's been bugging me for several days now. Thanks in advance.

So, I have 2 modems/routers, whatever the proper nomenclature is, one from ISP and one mine. I want to power them via USB-C rather then their original mains adapters (for reasons, that are hard to explain to sane people). Both routers come with 12V/3A mains adapters.
For this purpose I acquired USB-C charger with 250W and 5 ports, 2 of which can supply max 20V/3A. Since 12V isn't a standard PD voltage option (and to future proof,...
