    3com Officeconnect 10/100 8 Port Hub

Some of my hubs and switches are hissing (Sort of air sound not screaming). Since they are fanless I was curious. Opened one up and saw :

The two caps in the foreground are Gloria 6.3V 1500mf which appear to have swelling at the top and some slight discharge.

The caps in the background are GAE LESR 50V 1000mf. The small caps are Wendel 47mf 16V. Those appear to be fine.

Apart from the visual indications and the hissing sound the hubs are operating fine. I have 4 of these units grrrrr, purchased Feb 2000. Probably will get 1 24 port professional switch instead as it is time for more upgrading (will have to do some rewiring though). Any recommendations?

Here is a link I found to similar problems with what looks like an older model of 3com hub. Having read the article I noted strange collision problems also on one of my hubs but not regular at all.

get out the soldering iron and replace those caps.
many smps units hiss/fizz when the caps are bad.
change them before it gets worse.

mercyground : I had some intel inbusiness hubs previously also. They started making a terrible fan sound due to a cheap small fan on one of the chips and then the external power supplies just went dead one by one. Got one power supply out of the junk pile recently and opened it but it had nice rubycon caps and no signs of cap failure anyway. It is a pity these critical items have problems like this. A lifetime warranty with HP..nice......but havent seen one of those here recently.

kc8adu : thanx for the info about the smps units. I am learning a lot from this forum. I am looking at a cisco 2950 24 port switch, time to stop buying soho products and I can really use some of the admin features. Will repair the hubs later and store them for backup units.

Did recapping get rid of the "hissing"?? Looks like you have a pair of switchmode vreg's there, one is +3.3V, the other is -5V. Sometimes switchmode vregs have a "hiss" to them, usually in the inductors. Maybe that's what you were hearing?? Failing caps can certainly result in funny noises too.

Yeah the hissing is gone. I did some testing but I am getting some collisions, I dont remember it being like that. I will do some more because it may be due to NIC configurations. I dont have the same setups anymore. Like if i run it with intel pro1000mt cards it gets constant collisions but still transfers the data fine.

But if i connect to it with a 3com 100mb card and connect it to the network via a cisco switch i get minor but repeated collisions. Can send a large zip file back and forth with no corruption.

Thought i did a good job with the soldering though. I will try another (have 4 units to do) and see what happens.

turns out that it was a nic configuration issue or something, got it working fine now.

The switch has served me for 10+ years (was new when I bought it). It's a nice switch with connections on the back which makes for quite a clean desk. Reason for taking it apart was that the cooling fan was noisy so I expected it to be dirty/dusty inside and the need to order a new fan. What I found was that it was very dirty/dusty and some electrolytic capacitors which needs attention. There are 3 capacitors which needs to be replaced but the ESR on some of the other ones might be bad as well so I think I'll replace them all. Original...

                      by fredyjbi
                      I have a thinkpad L480 NM-B461 rev 1.0 laptop functioning normally with Type 1 port (JUSBC1)
if you use port type C 2 (JDOCK1) with a usb type meter it only displays 5v, thank you
I tried to look at the schematic diagram USBC_VBUS20, which is the port path from JusBC 1 to U4701 then goes to the system2 charging IC, why is there no system2 path leading to the charging IC on the TYPEC_VBUS20 port which is JDOCK1, thank you for your help.

if you look at the power sequence there must be 2 types of port type C a (JUSBC1) via U4701 and port type C b (JDOCK1)
                      On the type...

ASUS proart Studiobook h7600ZW; Had DC in port replaced and all the sudden it isn't charging but is the charging sign is on!
                      by Scarfycake
                      Hi all,

I sent my ProArt Studiobook 16 OLED (H7600, 12th Gen Intel) to the local repair guys to have a very simple DC in port replaced. I sourced the part myself on accessoires-asus (french company) after struggling to find the right part in the UK. It looked completely the same to the installed part from what I can tell. Originally the only issue with the laptop was a bad / loose DC connection, and so the computer and battery acted completely normal aside from a very poor connection that would fail at certain angles. After the repair was completed I brought it home and used it for...

1070 GPU. DVI port removed, wire in its place, why? Stuck on low clocks too.
                      by GlenBrim
I got this recently as-is. Gigabyte 1070 video card.

DVI port is removed. I don't know why.
A wire is soldered across two spots where it looks like the DVI port was. I don't know why.

I've read of people simply ripping out DVI ports and the rest of the cards still working fine. Never read anything about soldering a wire in there for some reason.

The card seems to work fine, except it's stuck in low clock speeds. While starting a game or benchmarking, the clocks may momentarily increase to around where they should be, then goes way back down and stays...

MacBook Air A2337 (820-02016) USB-C Port Issue – Only Works in One Orientation (CC Line Problem?)
                      by rounin
                      Hi everyone,

I'm working on a MacBook Air 2020 (A2337, board 820-02016) and running into a strange USB-C issue. I've gone through quite a bit of testing and part replacement, but I'm stuck — hoping someone here can shed some light.

                      🛠 Original Issue
                      The machine initially wouldn't negotiate 20V over USB-C — stuck at 5V.
Diagnosis showed PP1V5_UPC0_LDO_CORE shorted to ground.

I replaced U3100 (UF400) using a donor board (A2179), and the machine powers on fine now.

⚠️ New Problem: One USB-C Port Only Works in One Orientation...
