HP f1703 Monitor

    HP f1703 Monitor

    Powers on fine. Only displays VGA image for a second then turns off. Indicates there is no signal being received. Everything appears to ok on the graphics board.

    Now on the power board....

    I have noticed some bad solder joints on the choke coils and a bulging cap.

    Resistance on all caps on the board are the same (without removing)


    The worst thing is that I have a 19" HP which is doing the exact same thing!

    Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

    The cap in picture 2 is definitely bulging. Replace that.

    I'm the last person that should talking about soldering, but it looks like the solder joint just above D207 has a line fracture. A good solder joint should like the one right of D207. The left most solder joint (next to the word CONN) also looks like it has a split crater.

    I think that yellow/brown stuff my be flux and not cleaned off? Someone else can verify or dispute?

      6) HP 15 inches fl503 (AOC OEM)

      Fault diagnosis: Dark screen after switch on lcd monitor.

      Fault location: Found the dry joints on inductors L201 on high voltage inverter board. (This high voltage inverter board has three inductors have the same dry joints).

        VIOLA! That was it! Thank you for your time and consideration!

        Now as far as the bulging cap, all the caps on the board have same value in uf and voltage. When I checked resistance, they were all within a few thousands of each other. Does this mean that is is "showing bad", but will eventually go?

          What was "it"? Please clarify so we know what fixed "it"?

          How did you test the caps? With an ESR tester? or DMM with the caps unsoldered? What exact reading did you get for resistance?

            It was the those bad solder joints on the "L" coils. The board had 5 on it but only 3 had those crappy joints. Heated and reapplied.

            I have a Fluke 16 DMM and was getting 1.651 on the K scale, with cap still on board.

                Do replace that cap, if it's bulging, it has already failed. Piece of mind for a small amount of change that you won't have to open it anytime soon.

                  You can only use a DMM to see if the caps a shorted, but you can't test them if they have high ESR or not. For that you need an ESR meter.
                  What brand and series are the caps anyways? The one in pic 2 does look a bit bulged. If it is, then it's probably a good idea to replace all caps from that brand.

                    That is a very nice site and the free ebook is good ..I was reading the tips section and posted the link on this forum as it may help others as it did me.
