LG Monitors, how are the caps?

I just ordered an LG w3000h-bn to replace my TN-panel based HP w2408h. I'm concerned about the quality of the caps in the LG units though, since I've had to work on some of their plasma TV's that were full of Samwha and other cheap caps. Anyone here had to open up a newer LG LCD yet? I'm curious about the build quality. I'm also nervous about bad pixels on the LG, especially at this price level.

The HP has been great reliability wise, and has no bad pixels, but I can't stand the dithering (6-bit RGB) and poor viewing angle compared to the newer panels.

My December 2007 (bought in January 2008) Flatron L196WTQ-BF has Samxon GF in it. Hasn't failed yet though after two years of daily use. Nice build quality too, and a rotating stand with a metal base something you don't usually find on ~$200 TN monitors. Excellent picture as well.

Ya, I'm using it right now.

See my comparison to my old monitor here:

The color profile was set up wrong when I made the video... It's not that pale and green looking anymore. Nonetheless, it blew the old one away.

Samxon GF are CRAP replace them on sight. I've had plenty of Gateway LCDs with nearly all the Samxon GFs bulged.

Here's a pic of them I posted back in 07 from the secondary of a Gateway LCD every single secondary bulged.

I thought Samxon discontinued that series? This is why I stick to Panasonic, Rubycon, Nichicon, and Chemicon. I'm still wary of the Chinese companies.

I usually leave Samxon caps alone but if I see this series it's an instant replace on sight.

I should probably replace them before my favorite LCD fails on me... problem is that this LCD has RoHS soldering and I don't think my iron (40w) gets hot enough.

EDIT: also Samxon may have discontinued the series for all we know; my monitor is starting to get old (I've had it for two years and a month now) and we all know two years is a long time in the world of electronics.

you can solder lead-free with 25w.

Re: LG Monitors, how are the caps?

Just put some leaded solder on top of it to help wet it. That will help the braid suck it up.

I used a 20W unregulated Hakko Dash for years and that's what I had to do.

You don't have to solder lead free on the board just use leaded for the new components I always do.

Now that I have a regulated FX-951 station I don't have to do stuff like that anymore I can just use the braid directly on the lead free. I can't believe what I was missing.

Seasonic B12 BC-550 – barely 2 years old and with BAD CAPS already!

I know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.

For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

                  Heathkit IO-4205 Power Supply Caps
                  by eryjus
                  Hello,

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."
                  ...

Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

Identifying caps on an old Zoom 9000
                  by Paxman_Swede
                  Hello!

I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.

The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.

I have studied the board and...

damn. I'm disappointed these high quality caps made my power supply worse
                  by link626
I thought my tv power supply was stable. It's been stable for a few weeks since I swapped in nichicon, united cc, panasonic caps to replace the cheap china caps.

But today it caused my tv to have a flickering spasm again.

                  what a letdown.

I swapped back my backup power board which has cheap china caps, and the tv backlight stopped flickering.

Sometimes these high quality caps just don't make things better.
