    Dell LCD monitor

Hey.. I have a LCD monitor from dell, and it was blacking out. I opened it up and found the bad capacitor... The bad capacitor is 1000uf 16v. I was wondering if i could change that with a capactior that is 450uf 16v? Another question i have is how do i know which side is negative or postive? One side is shaded all gray, and one isnt? Thank you.

You should never go lower in capacitance you can go slightly higher however I try to make sure that I never go higher than 20% (the tolerance of electrolytics).

Anyhow you should replace ALL of the caps on the secondary side of the power supply not just one since the other caps will probably be ready to fail if are the same make.

You need to use Low ESR 105 C replacements not just any General Purpose cap that most electronics stores carry.

I recommend Panasonic FCs from Digikey or contact Topcat for your caps.

As for which side is the negative side the one with the band running down is negative.

Manufacturers usually put a bunch of - marks down this band which indicates the capacitors negative lead.

Alright.. So i should change every single cap? Or just the ones that are like the broken one? And can you point me to a website that has thesse.. I have had trouble finding them in radioshack.

            Thank you.

If you can tell us the brands of caps that are in it we can tell you which of those usually cause problems.
All of whatever brand that bloated should go.
            -
After you know which should go and if you have time a list of the the problem caps such as: qty(of that cap), uF, volts, and diameter might be helpful to someone else reading this later on.

Thank you guys very much.. Your fast replies are amazing. Well the "brand name" of the bulged capacitor is from Nichicon and there are 2 of them. They are both 1000uf 16v... So i guess i should change both of them right?

Since you replied so quickly, I checked on this one:
                http://cgi.ebay.com/DELL-E153FPc-FLA...d=p3286.c0.m14

3 hrs at $32 is what I would pay just to get the glass.
The shipping is what kills it.
I've ended up with boxes of these things.

Yeah. Im thinking of getting a new one if replacing the capacitors wont work. But i figured i could try and get a learning experience while im at it. This replacing of capacitors is interesting.

                    Re: Dell LCD monitor

Nichicon is a good brand but they had a bad batch a few years ago are those caps on the inverter HM or HN series by any chance?

Those are the two series affected.

As for finding the caps PM Topcat or go to Digikey.com.

Low ESR caps made by Rubycon, Nippon Chemi-con, Panasonic, Samxon, or Nichicon to name a few will be fine.

                      That's correct.
Nichicon HN and HM with date codes between 2001-2004 may be from bad batches.
Date code is as: [letter][2 digit year][2 digit week] and should be marked right on the caps.
HM and HN are different grades and you should consider the grade in choosing replacements.
So which series are they? (Even if they're not HN/HM.)

                        Re: Dell LCD monitor

Hi all, I need help in buying a Widescreen LCD Monitor for my new desktop? I am choosing between 2 monitors, both of them are in the same price range. Samsung 22" widescreen LCD contrast ratio of 1000:1. LG 22" widescreen LCD contrast ratio of 10000:1. The LG has a much bigger contrast ratio and I do not know what this means. I just want the best picture quality for my games and DVD watching. Thanks
                        I need a lcd monitor

Samsung is known for crappy caps.
I have no idea about LG.

Yeah both of my Samsung LCDs had Crapxon caps in them I cracked them open and replaced them with Panasonic FCs.

They weren't bulging.... yet. But I like to take a proactive approach.
