2 seconds to black on FPD2485W.

    2 seconds to black on FPD2485W.

    Hello, I have what seems to be a very common problem on this monitor. Upon turning on, I get either the gateway logo or my desktop for a moment, then black. The buttons and speaker all function as if the monitor were working.

    I apologize as this probably sounds like a very newbie question, but I'm not sure which board is bad. It seems to be either the power board or inverter board, but which is the likely culprit? I bought this ebay auction:

    ...but now after reading this forum I'm not convinced that replacing the capacitors on that board will solve my problem. This eBay auction that repairs this issue has the buyer send him the inverter board:

    I'm sorry if this is way too beginner level, but it would be awesome to be able to repair the display rather than throwing it out. I appreciate any input you folks might have.

    The problem is called 'two seconds to black'. There are a number of possible causes, one of them is bad caps. The first step is to open the monitor up and post some pictures. See my signature for some links.

      Pictures are always a good Idea to post.
      I have a local recycler that I get monitors from .I am seeing quite a few gateway monitors come in it looks like they were made in 2006 and 07, They have had capacitor problems causing the two sec to black problem, The capacitors did not always show signs of bulging, I would recommend putting together a list of the caps needed, Including the small ones around the SMPS transformer and replace them. You can usually spend less than ten dollars.
      There are other problems that can cause a two sec to black problem but I think capacitors would be a good place to start

        Yep, mine was manufactured in 2006. I am replacing all the capacitors on the power board today. If it doesn't work I will post some pictures. There are two capacitors on the inverter board as well. Could those be the issue?

          What wattage soldering iron should I be using to get these capacitors out and resoldered? I have a 15W iron that I usually use for electronics but it is not melting the solder in the existing joints.

            Caps on the inverter could be an issue, yes. 15W is a little low but maybe workable. Try adding some fresh solder to mix with the existing and see if you can get it to flow. Are you using a sucker or wick to remove?

              15 watts is a lot light for this. I use a 40 watt to unsolder, and a venerable Ungar 27 watt to solder in the new. With the 40 watt I can move from lead to lead, rocking the old cap out. Then I use a dissecting pick to clear the molten solder out of the holes.

              What caps are you using for replacements?

                I'm using the caps from the eBay auction I posted in the OP. I'm going to grab a better iron now. I'm used to much more delicate work so my irons are very low wattage.

                          I just use the irons from Radio Shack. I know that's probably blasphemy on this board but they work for me!

                            lol i think plainbill meant the caps. afaik soldering irons dont have esr :P

                                Says in their listing they only use panasonic caps. Dosen't list series, but they are all 105c.
