    marantz MCD 810 cassette deck

    MCD810. Good condition.
When I press play, the VU meters max out, with or without cassette loaded. The play head or pickup looks like it could have some gunk on it but not sure. I took some isopropyl to it and the meters are still maxed out. Can't seem to locate a service manual. Any thoughts?

do the meters go maximum if you place it in record mode? it might be a dirty record/playback switch.

Yes, a dirty record-play switch can make the circuit oscillate. Common in cassette decks.
Best to take it apart and put contact cleaner like DeOxit D5 in the really long switch (but not on the belts!). A trick in the shop was to take a small screwdriver and exercise the switch lever (inside the unit) 50 times or so, back and forth, to scrape off heavy oxide buildup.

Another method, without taking it apart, is pushing the no-record tab sensor up (using a junk cassette, or your finger or scotch tape), while pressing the record button a zillion times to exercise it. Not too rough.
If the deck has a motorized transport then this is not the best method.

When you say 'switch', you mean the actual mechanical play switch? I wouldn't think that would cause any audio disturbance, such as a turn/slide POT would..

The record-play switch is on the circuit board, not the front panel. It is a long multi-section switch with a spring or wire linking it mechanically to move when you press the record button on the front panel. Note the REC button won't move, it has a lockput, unless the tab is pushed up. With the door open, a pinky pushing up on the rec tab sensor, then I can push the REC button down.

Don't be too rough, just find a way to press and release the record button a dozen times and see if that helps the problem. Ultimately contact cleaner is best. Dirty rec/play switches are very common problem because they don't move for years and get oxidized. I've seen many decks oscillate and peg VU meters due to this.
I bought a 2252B in 1978 but went with the JVC KD-55 cassette deck. No idea what these Marantz decks are like.

Kenwood KX-56CW Duel Cassette Deck Repair
              by dustfilledhobo
              Hello!

I'm trying to fix my Kenwood KX-56CW dual cassette deck (seen in the picture below).

Everything functions as it should except that the motor for tape deck B plays back extremely fast (tape deck A functions properly). I've located the two trim pots on the board that control the speed of deck B and they were only able to bring the speed down a little bit. I was able to find a schematic online (attached) with suggested voltages, so I measured the board while playing a tape in deck B (as per the instructions on the schematic). Some voltages were...

Denon DR-M10HX Cassette Deck Servicing Help
              by Nevillet
              Hi All,

I have an old Denon DR-M10HX cassette deck and want to service it.
I have aquired some test tapes and I have a scope. When I connect the scope to the L&R line level outputs I see a great deal of high frequency noise. Equally when I play a 3.5KHz test tape it's hard to see the test frequency through the noise.

              Any advise would be welcome.

[Marantz SR5012] Center channel keeps going into ASO/Overcurrent protection.
              by acedogblast
First off I would like to thank this community as it has provided me with great information that has helped me greatly on my repair for this Marantz SR5012 AV receiver. I am creating this new thread as the other 2 that I have created here has had their original question/problem solved and I plan that this is the final thread on my repair. Please note that this is my first time repairing audio amplifiers so I may not be aware of common issues and things to know.

Lets start at what I have done so far. Random speaker popping on all channels is fixed by replacing the 2 large filter...

Marantz Model 150 Tuner "NULL" Adjustment..
              by Mark R
I am not ashamed to say this is my first FM alignment I have ever done. I am well versed in electronics and repair. Been doing it for many years on Pro Audio Live sound equipment. Worked on Power amps EQ's musical gear and Large format Mixing Live consoles Etc. But now I can see this is a whole different world when it comes to tweaking this kind of gear. I do have the proper gear like the SENCORE SG 80 and HP Generators and Scopes Etc.

Look below at Adjustment 12:8. The Null adjustment. I have a Heathkit IM-28 VTVM that was rebuilt and has new Burned in tubes that I used for this...

Marantz SR5007 popping on volume change and mute in Direct Mode
              by BigOof
              Hi,

I bought a used Marantz SR5007 and it's giving me some issues that I can't seem to really place. It functions well in most settings, ARC mostly works, it has no issues driving my speakers in any of the digital input modes, but I'm having issues running analog inputs in direct or pure direct mode. For some reason in this mode there's distortion for every volume increment I give it, but once the volume is stable it has no issues. Muting creates a loud pop, switching to another source also causes a pop and so does turning off the amp in that mode. Again, no issue in the digital modes....
