Sony STR-DE475 receiver repair, Left channel lower volume than Right, toasted caps

This Sony STR-DE475 multichannel receiver with MN2488 / MP1620 power transistor pairs shows lower volume level at Left channel. Balance setting is centered. At scope view, signals at equal level before µPC2581V (uPC2581V) preamp ICs, but after them signal level differs. Difficult to take live measures at that point, due to large bridges blocking access to components pins.

As noted in other threads and other forums, these Nec µPC2581V get very hot, cannot stand a finger on them.

    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=6931

There're about 6 caps that almost touch these preamps: C701, C703, C653, C751, C753 and C603. C601 and C651 are related too but they "live" a bit far away. Measured ESR from these caps and they're dramatically high, some higher than 99Ω, which is the maximum that my meter can measure. All caps in this amp are 85ºC grade, which is clearly not enough for caps close to those "heaters".

Replaced mentioned caps and now audio level is equal at both channels, but we all know that it'll fail again in years, because this is a design flaw. At least now they're 105ºC grade.

Note that C701, C651, C751 and C601 (4.7uF/50V) are coupling caps where L, SL, R and SR pass through, respectively, before entering preamps. It's clear that higher ESR means higher attenuation in this case!

Forgot to say that this receiver had another failure: when knocking front side, speaker relays click. I noticed broken solder joints on connectors (CNS100 - CNP100) that connect two front boards. One pin is for headphone muting switch, that's it.

Could you mount some of these on them with thermal tape? http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/...3lSFo8UYpA0%3d .

Sony HCD-HX80R Amplifier Volume Control Problem
      by crackedprint
I have a strange fault on a Sony amplifier. The volume control varies the display from MIN, then 1 up to 30 and then MAX as expected. At MIN there is no sound. However, at 1 it is quite loud and increasing above 1 does not change the sound level.

I have tried a Cold Reset as per the service manual.

I have looked at the I2C clock and data to volume control chip IC501 (BD3499FV). Data is only sent to IC501 when the volume is set to MIN or 1. At any other setting no data is sent to IC501.

I have looked all the way through the service manual and tried many online...

old X58 triple channel board... memtest86 memory speed?
      by eccerr0r
Anyone run memory speed tests with an old X58-based triple channel 1st gen or any other >2 channel board? The one I have is a Gigabyte I think.

Anyway I had four 4GB DDR3-1333 modules in the 6 memory slots and got around 11GB/sec memory speeds assuming that it went dual channel since it didn't have enough modules for triple channel. Now I stuck in two more 4GB modules, but they are DDR3-1600. I'm still getting 11GB/sec speeds according to memtest86...

Just wondering, anyone do memory speed analysis on these triple (and higher) channel memory boards? Are there any...

      Sony Receiver STR-4800SD L/R Balance
      by sretchko
Hey fellow solder fume lovers, I have a Vintage Sony Receiver STR-4800 SD that has me stumped.
The Balance Pot has to be set at about 30 degrees (11 o'clock) to the left for the output to be balanced (see photo). I'm using an oscope, sig gen 1kHz sine, 8 ohm dummy load).

When output is balanced (11 o'clock left) both channels clip at about 19 vac / 45 watts RMS, Amp is rated at 35 watts so I know the amp modules are good. Square wave also looks good when turning bass & treble pots and is in phase.

I pulled the balance pot, (Dual 10K MN Taper) cleaned with...

Reverse engineering of 18650 4-channel tester
      by spleenharvester
      Hi friends

I have reverse engineered this tester, schematic is attached and is complete except for capacitor values. These testers annoyingly have no model number but they are the ones you find on the first page of just about any website if you type in "18650 4-channel tester". There is also a 2-channel variant and a newer 8-channel variant. They are very cheap (about £15) and can measure voltage, current, internal resistance and capacity. They have a multicolour display for all these statistics. They also have terminal blocks so that if you want to use a breakout board...

Vizio D65x-G4 Volume changes on its own
      by karthur
On this Vizio D65x, the volume will change on its own. I don't mean like during commercials where the volume will increase. I mean its like the (+) volume button on the remote is pressed and the actual volume dialog is displayed on the screen going up. It will do this, then the volume may start going down. It might go all the way to "0"or it might stop at a different number, then start going back up. The whole time its doing this, the volume dialog is shown on the screen.

It wont do it until it has been "ON" for 20 or 30 minutes, so it does seem to be heat related....
