Yamaha C-40 pre-amp recap

First post here. I have been recapping some of my audio equipment for the past year with good success. My next project is my 1980's era Yamaha C-40 preamp. I was surprised when I cracked it open and saw a bunch of very high quality caps right from the factory - Black Gates, high end Nichis, Elna "For Audio", etc.

Many of the caps on the board are no longer manufactured, so I'm trying to match up the closest equivalent manufactured today. The two caps that have me stumped are:

Nichicon SE
Nichicon KS

What would be their equivalent replacements today?

KS seem to still be manufactured, and Digikey stock them, apparently.

Regarding the SE's, can't really find any information. I've found ES, which are (also) "for audio", but that's about it.

Thanks for that. Looks like they still use the "KS" name, but they are nothing like what is in the pre-amp. The new ones are large snap-ins, whereas the KS in the pre-amp are green, say "Muse" on them and are much smaller value.

Muse should still be in production, albeit likely with other series names.

Excellent. I think I'll use the Fine Gold Muse series.

Did you ever make any progress on this?

I picked up a C-85, and am thinking about refreshing it, along with an M-35 I have.

Before you waste a lot time and money replacing caps, why don't you put it on a distortion analyzer and see if there are any problems? How does the unit sound right now?

I'm not sure if you're speaking to me or the OP, but my C-85 sounds great, in that it has amazing imaging/separation, and very full sound. And while the highs are very non-fatiguing, they seem to be a bit hashed at times. BUT one other variable I want to change before I do anything else is the sound card. I'm using an X-Fi Extreme Music, at the moment. However, I never play games, anymore so I'm going to swap my old M-Audio Delta 410 back in, and see how it sounds -- I get proper RCA jacks on the breakout cable that way, too.

I just wanted to give an update: I finally found the appropriate drivers for the Delta 410 (M-Audio uses a unified driver for the Delta family, now but doesn't direct you appropriately when searching for Win7 drivers for the 410) and got it up and running. It sounds significantly better than the X-Fi--many more sounds and instruments I didn't notice in the recordings with the X-Fi. And many of the sounds now have more resolution in that a sound I dismissed as a mild form of percussion, before is now obviously a person's hand slapping against something, I can hear guitar picks scratching against the strings or breathing that wasn't evident in the recording, before. And soundstage is much larger.

This old Yamaha equipment is great stuff, and I feel sad for anyone who might not be able to appreciate them because their latest-greatest soundcard or source in general is inferior to an old, professional card.

I can't help but wonder what the OP is using as a source.
