    What has gotten into me?

For some reason I can't stop buying old audio stuff lately. I went so far as to start stocking my own caps from UCC and Panasonic for rebuilding whatever I get my hands on.

So far I have amassed a collection of vintage receivers and other stuff. Some of the most noteworthy:

    Marantz 2240
    Pioneer SX-434
    Pioneer SX-780
    Kenwood KR-810
    Realistic Modulaire 8
    A couple others I don't remember

    Akai GX-260D
    Pioneer CT-401R
    Fisher CR-37
    Hitachi D-E66
    Milovac SC-300
    Sony TC-200
    Pioneer PL-516

So far I've restored the SX-434, and I'm almost done with the SX-780 and GX-260D. I've been using mostly UCC KY series and Panasonic FC.

I love how stuff from the 70's has a heavy steel frame inside it and is built to last forever. I think I have an addiction now, though

LOL yeah mate they did sort of make the stuff like battleships

it could be a bit "in ya face" to look at but those were the days when big and flashy was the name of the game.

I guess you just hate to see it go to the scrap yard...I know that feeling

"Those were the days my friend we thought they'd never en we'd sing &"....noooo....now I singing Mary Hopkins songs.......
(ok yeah a little before the 70's)

BTW post piccies I like to see the before and after shots, thats if you don't mind

    Cheers

I have a Marantz 2220b and a Pioneer SX450. Both very stout units, and quite under-rated for power. I think the 450 is rated 15wpc, and it's not even tube!

My SX-450. Got it for free at school... the band teacher was going to throw it out. I happened to be walking past the band room on the last day of school and saw it sitting on top of the trash can. Asked her if I could have it, and she was more than happy to see me haul it home

Wow, that is beautiful, and it almost went to the dump

          http://www.silverpioneer.netfirms.co..._receivers.htm

The SX-450 is 15 watts per channel, just like my SX-434, only it is a bit newer. Did you rebuild it, or is that how it looked when you brought it home?

I'll post some pics of my collection soon, if I have a minute.

Re: What has gotten into me?

That's how it looked... from the front, anyway. The sides are beat up, and the back isn't too nice. The connections they had from the factory were a joke.

This unit works okay, but the balance is biased heavily to the left channel. It also has a very strange cold start buzz that I've yet to figure out. The lights on the unit flicker and the speakers buzz for a while, then all at once it'll give a little snap and everything will be fine. It probably needs a good recap and then solder all the joints where it's just wire-wrapped posts.

Once the mechanicals are figured out, I'm either going to do it myself, or find someone to re-veneer the wood endcaps.

I was at a friend of a friend's house once and their father had all pioneer silver-face gear, and he had the optional all-wood cabs. Stuff like that would fetch a pretty penny on eBay.

I love the sound of the Pioneer... a warm, tube-like sound, with the umph of solid-state.

              Here's the Marantz 2220b-

It's a step-up at 20wpc! I really need to get on restoring this one. It works fine... I use it daily in my computer rig driving an old pair of EPI bookshelf speakers. But, all the front panel lights are out, the string that drives the tuner off of the weighted knob is unstrung, and it's just generally in a state of half-finishedness. But boy does it ever match up with these EPI's nicely.

I just reread your first post and see you have a 780... I bet that thing could make even my SDA's sing! I had the 450 hooked up to them, and it was fine at a lower volume, but had nowhere near enough headroom to drive the three 6.5" drivers and two tweeters per speaker. Sadly, the SDAs were not built to be an efficient speaker.

Definately sounds like caps. Could also be arcing switch contacts or solder joints as well.

The Marantz 2240 I bought needs restoration too. I already have a light kit, as well as some other parts. I'll be posting videos of the restoration on Youtube like I did with the SX-434 and others.

Here is a video of SX-434 before restoration:

EDIT: Went out and looked in the box and there is an old pair of Koss Headphones Pro-4AA's. Aparenly he used to be into high quality audio equipment

I have a pair of original 1970's Ko Pro-4aa's. Plus the boxes and receipt, too. Have it all for the Marantz as well. I got all of that stuff from one guy who kept everything.

It's unfortunate that that stuff is just sitting in a garage . It should be hooked up and being enjoyed. The 4aa's are a great set of 'phones that are actually still being sold today for $60/pair... though I don't think they've make them any more comfortable. Most good headphones are heavy... which leads to? NECK PAIN!

Marantz had a very good reputation in the audio world

I have on hand a very old Receiver from late 80's.
The brand is called Victoria. The whole unit is silver.

Any idea who made this unit. It's damn heavy.
