deoxit & Fisher ca 880 amp, Akai AP-D40 turntable, sony zs yn7 boombox

i have some old components & a not so old boombox that hopefully are only suffering from crud/corrosion that can be cleaned & lubed to restore function.

the amp & turntable both have declined in function over the years & were put on a closet shelf for 5+ yrs. amp right channel was weak & now dead. tested phone, tape, aux & tuner inputs & left channel output is good on those components (R channel works fine in L input). speakers work fine on L output. i'll do all the knobs, but give attention to volume, pullout mix, and balance & hope that solves it like it did for ntehicks in his thread

    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=27273

the turntable works but the speed control knob no longer raises the rpm up to spec. it may need to be re-adjusted after cleaning (i have the manual & instructions for V1 & V2 pot adjustment). here are links where i found good info & manuals (must register to download)

    Code:
    www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/fisher/ca-880.shtml
    www.vinylengine.com/library/akai/ap-d40.shtml
in the pic below you can see the boombox has a set of 4 push buttons on top the CD door - some intermittent, some not working - the round one next to them works fine. it was used in a workplace, so dust etc landed on it regularly. still have the remote which works fine.

i've not used contact cleaner or lube before, so hoping those who have will offer more specifics than what i've already read here or watched on youtube - namely:

    1. product - i'm not in a hurry & willing to spend more for a better product, but if i can get something local that is pretty good, i'd at least like to be able to consider it. i found microcenter carries paired 0.5oz spray deoxit spray & gold (looks like i can get 10x as much for less than $10 more elsewhere), & lowes has 13.5oz spray IDEAL Contact Cleaner
    2. application - spray or needle or brush or plastic tube. which deoxit (5% or 100%) & application method works best for various things i'm hoping to clean. do i need the spray to wash out the contacts, or can i let them soak a bit (how long - i read one suggestion of repeating over 2-3 days? does the cleaner dry quickly?), work the knob ~25 times and use canned air to blow out the crud (air is cheap!)
    3. where & how to apply - the vids i watched showed pots that have a hole on the bottom side & said that if not accessible, trying to get some from the front past the knob post/stem (knobs just pull off or what?). for the turntable internal speed adjust pots with the screw slot on top - go thru the top or? how about the topside control knob, also pops off? for the boombox buttons, do they pop off, or shall i apply on the top edge & let gravity do the work? any worries about the little LCD screen below?

any advice is appreciated - thanks

here's the update after 60+ views & no comments - but thanks for checking even if you have nothing to say

found that ratshack carries deoxit d5 cleaner spray & g5 gold spray so got them when i went grocery shopping nearby - $40+ total. put d5 to work on the amp & the turntable. no change in amp's dead right channel (will ask about amp later since i picked up a free flaky channel Technics SU-Z780 with an apparantly quite nice SVI3205 power ic, that got d5 & g5 treatment & seems to work just fine now).

the turntable's fine pitch adjuster now works smoothly (not jumping around at any touch). adjusting speed from the V1 & V2 pots required turning them all the way & the 45 speed is still a bit slow (<5% i think) with the top pitch adjuster all the way up. happily @ 33 there is still about 20% more to go. i dont play 45s so no problem. i'm wondering if anyone can suggest where to borrow a test record to adjust wow/flutter (V3,4,5) - nothing in the catalogue of my big city library where i used to borrow LPs - they must have junked them all tho i guess i could call about it.

the boombox was left at my sister's & remains there, so nothing to report.

for those wondering as i did having no experience.. i watched a few youtube vids where they point out alot of the front knob POTs have an opening on the bottom which may be hard to access. the fisher amp bottom comes off & makes it easy to reach openings on the bottom or the side - the volume & balance POTs were open & could be sprayed from top & bottom. the technics treble knob cant be accessed without desoldering stuff as far as i can tell, so i sprayed the post under the knob & left it at that. the others were reachable with the spray's long tube. i also sprayed the various push buttons / speaker A/B sliders as best i could.

The Caig products are the best I've found so far. Sounds like your doing pretty good so far. A test record may come up on e-bay keep checking.
