Help repairing Yamaha RM1X synthesizer/groovebox - PCB trace for capacitor has been pulled off

    Hi guys,

I've been trying to restore this Yamaha RM1X groove-box I bought, and the first thing on my agenda was to replace a bad capacitor that was making it so that the screen was super dim. As I'm a complete novice I went and accidentally pulled off one of the trace pads for the SMD capacitor as I was removing it, pulling up some of the green PCB with it. I've been trying to repair it by gluing down copper tape from where it began to pull off and solder the capacitor on after...atm I've just been attempting to do the same kind of thing on rubbish PCBs I got at a recycling place, but every time I attempt to properly tin the copper tape and solder the cap onto it the copper tape pulls up. I have tried a few different glues - super glue, araldite, epoxy. I usually scratch away the PCB coating first then glue copper tape onto that with a boarder of copper around the tape, put some solder on the copper tape and try to solder a capacitor to it but as soon as it gets hot it pulls away. Any advice?

I would scrape back the solder mask on the board where the trace used to go with an xacto/hobby knife. Tin the exposed copper on the pcb and put the cap on sideways sliding it into the solder you just put onto the board. Then solder the other end onto the pad. It doesn't have to be straight or perfect it just has to make a connection and the area next to the cap looks like it's connected to where the pad used to go.

I tried my best to mark up your photo to explain what I mean, but an artist I am not.

Same here. In this case I go sideways. But you can also take a through hole capacitor and go the old way and just have one leg a bit longer. I would put solder mask or conformal coating over the bare parts of the traces. It’s no biggie… it happens…

Copper corrosion? Yamaha HS8S Audio 1 output only
          by mecha1166
OAUD Yamaha HS8S Audio one output only.

I have pulled the output board. Output txsistors are ok (only 2 main output). Everything measures the same on each side. Customer did not bring in speakers so I cannot go too deep. I did notice a greenish tint on the tip of the solder joints that connect to the COPPER output connectors. All 6 have a greenish tint at the tip - each side has 3 pins each. Anyone else have copper speaker output pins that corrode at the place on the PCB where they are soldered? I will try to add a photo. Thanks.

IBM LTO 7 Tape Drive - Dust Sensors??
          by RetroComputingGrotto
I have a Quantum SuperLoader robotic tape library that uses an IBM LTO 7 tape drive which is constantly complaining that it needs cleaning. If you insert a cleaning tape, it performs the clean and resets the cleaning counter to 0 hours. It should only require cleaning every 50 or so working hours but after as little as just 1 hours use it requests cleaning. We've purchased a new cleaning tape along with new LTO backup tapes but that has not resolved the problem.

I have taken the library apart and can see no noticeable signs of dust inside. I have removed the tape drive from the...

Is it possible bridging tiny broken trace
          by chth96
When I assembled dreamcast I mistakenly fastened long bolt and It resulted in
          cutting tiny trace.
This tiny trace(Total width of white coating is 5.5mm) is between R337,R343 and IC101 and it is covered with white coating in the below screenshot.

Firstly I tried to bridging tiny broken trace with my own eyes...But it is totally impossible..So a week ago, I ordered G1200 Digital Microscope and I magnified this tiny broken trace with it.

But It seems that It is really very tiny trace So I plan to order 0.1mm coper wire from aliexpress in order to bridging...

          Problem

This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....

LG 75UN8570AUD panel issue fixed with tape.
          by triplefour
I've been seeing a lot of the new TVs (samsung and LG only i think) maybe 1-2 years old suffering from sudden panel death and have been over 50% successful bringing them at least most of the way back to functionality if not all the way, with the tape masking of the LVDS pins method.
add this one to the list. the issue was on the left side of the panel and i ended up blocking just 3 pins on the connector that joins the two panel boards that make up the left side of the panel (it has 4 boards total) i didnt get the picture back to 100% perfect. i spent hours fiddling with which pins to block...
