    Conrad Johnson CAV-50 repair

I have this unit in for repair, it was supposedly repair by the High end pro shop due to clicking sound when it is first turned on and was not as loud as it used to be.
I turn it on and can hear the relay clicking away for about 1/2 minute and then stop, I can get the sound from the amp through the speakers OK.
Open it up and it looks like the filter cap for DC power supply for the filament and the audio source selector relays has been replaced. I look on line and see that the some of them has 4700uF 25V some of them has 10,000uF (this one has 10,000uF 35V installed by the repair shop).
I check the DC voltage it shows about 4.5VDC which seems to low for 6V filament. Check the AC ripple with my Fluke RMS, it shows >1VAC. The AC output of the transformer is just a little over 6VAC, so I expect the DC to be higher than that and should be close to 6VDC at full load by the tube filaments. So something is not right, I check the ripple frequency, it show 60Hz instead of 120Hz for full wave rectification. It means the diode may be shorted of have leakage, checking with meter show reading in high Meg Ohms range, so I use my LC75 leakage current test, two of the diode show off scale leakage current at 50V scale (GI854 is rated at 3A, 400V https://cdn.badcaps-static.com/pdfs/...1d66e2faa5.pdf), seeing 3A rating and the location where these Diodes are which the board turned brown so they have been running hot. I look up the spec of the tubes, the 4 output tubes alone draw 1.5A each, so add another about 2A for the smaller tubes, the current draw is exceeding the rating of the Diode.
I temporary hook up the bridge and use 4700uf cap (per Conrad Johnson, CJ told me to send in the unit for repair and will not provide me the circuit diagram) to test and see if the voltage will be normal, now I do have 6VDC, with about 200mV 120Hz ripple frequency.
So now I will install new bridge in heatsink and mount it to the chassis, I can find 10A diode but it will not solve heat problem.
By the way, I saw a lot of suggestion on line for people to upgrade the cap to 10,000 uF to fix the relay chatter and to improve sound. It seems to me that instead of finding why the relays are chattering in the first place and check the ripple frequency, voltage, look up the spec of the diodes, the they would have known the real reason of the problem.
I am surprised that for such an expensive amplifier, they did not use the correct rating diodes to do the job. It does sound good though.

i would fit a 10a or higher schottky rectifier or a pair of 30a double-diodes from a pc psu.
then re-solder the relay (always a good idea)

Do not forget that this not regulated filament power supply, lower Vf diode will mean higher filament voltage being applied to the tubes. The temp bridge I use for testing has 25A rating with heat sink is fine and giving me 6VDC for the tubes so I will modify it with this bridge, I do not want to use lower Vf diode because the voltage is not regulated (same problem with old Fisher stereo 400, 500 series which use Selenium rectifiers and people just replace it with Silicon didoes without thinking that the bias and the filaments voltage will be so much higher), right now at 120VAC input, the voltage feeding the filament is at 6V, with lower Vf and if the line voltage goes high, the filament voltage will be higher which will shorten the life of the tubes.

No, the filaments run off that rectifier circuits, most of the high end tubes amps use DC for filament instead of AC to reduce the electron emission at 60Hz or 50Hz rate which also reduces the hum, etc.

Did they really have 8A flowing through 3A diodes? How old is this amp?

It's strange to see common faults that never get repaired properly.

it's a clone of an old heathkit - it's not very old.
these used to get sold as kits in the 80's & 90's pretty cheap.
i think they still make them, but now they light the tubes from under the socket with blue led's for extra effect.

I was playing with one of those "filament" LED lamps. I noticed it seemed to flicker a bit...so I tried powering it with different things to try to extract information about it - noticed it seems to be 100% LED - no droppers, no PSU, no rectifiers, nothing - the LED "filaments" are hooked straight to the contacts!

Wondering what's the distribution of how "filament" LED lamps are driven? Do any have capacitive droppers? rectifiers? CC PSUs?

                  ---

Found another "filament" LED that does have a PSU in it, seems to be a capacitive...

pile of vacuum tubes... what to toss?
                  by eccerr0r
I wonder how many people are in the same boat...

I have a pile of vacuum tubes I've collected over the years. Now the question is: which ones should be disposed of, if you don't have access to a tube tester?

I had swapped a tube into my AR-3 and noticed that sometimes the audio would cut out. Rapidly turning the radio off and on through the control knob "fixes" it, but pulling the plug and replugging rapidly does not.

I randomly swapped in another IF amplifier tube, and it seemed to have "fixed" it, suspecting the tube that I took...

                  Insignia NS-32L430A11 backlight issue
                  by arnard
I have a weird backlight issue on the above Insignia Plasma that I am coming up empty on researching.

The display is darker on the left than on the right side of the screen. It uses 4 U shaped plasma tubes. I have had it apart deep enough to tell you that the tubes are bright as they should be at the electrode ends but dim as they get to and go around the bend.

Since it is all 4 tubes it seems like it would be an inverter/backlight board but obviously can't be a blown up component as it does still somewhat work. I'm thinking low voltage but no idea where to go beyond...

                  Hi everyone!

I managed to get my hands on a rough condition B&K 707 for "the best price" because it was not working. It's my first tube tester and I'm really wanting to get it up and running. I downloaded that manual that has the schematics and tested every resistor and capacitor and replaced the ones that failed. I replaced the missing 83 rectifier tube with a used but tested-good one. I also have a number 80 rectifier tube that I have used in tests before I found the 83 tube.

Initially I noticed that I was not getting the red on-light to turn on, but it...
