If the fan has only two wires, gets full voltage, does not hum or get warm and turns freely by hand then it must be broken somehow. What's the voltage across the cap'? Also disconnect the motor and measure the Ohms in it if you can.

It sounds like the motor may have gone bad with open windings or the capacitor is bad. Motor caps usually bulge when they short internally. The cap could also be open. I agree with Requeline, ohms check your motor. Also, if you can, test your motor cap, it generally needs to be within 10% (6.75 to 8.25 uf).
Stupidity should be a crime, especially for drivers. I have NO patience for them.

Whoops I lost track of this thread. No motor hum when voltage is applied sounds like open windings in the motor. If so the motor should be replaced.

If the motor hums and there is no rotation that means a bad motor start cap and a hand spin should get it going.

However if the start cap was bad the motor wouldn't start and you unknowingly let it hum (generates tons of heat) then yes you'd burn the windings out that way.

But from my understanding most motors have automatic (or switch reset if your motor is older) thermal overload protectors to kill power to the motor if the windings rise above a certain temp.

Elements of the past and the future combining to make something not quite as good as either.

Krankshaft- I've seen thermal fuses in the windings of motors, especially fractional horsepower. They work but they are non-resetting. Usually they are in motors for small fans (portable 12 + 20") or in small heaters including wall-mounted heaters.

When was the last time you gave the filter and the fins a good clean?

KDM 480W PSU upgrade succes! (opinions?)
              by bauto601
Back in 2020 i bought a (2nd hand) compact ATX psu to replace my current one. My PC case only fits very short ATX power supplies so i didn't really have the choice of buying a decent 80Plus unit. The current unit is a modded YoungYear unit that i made a thread about a while ago:
A "nice" YoungYear unit? - Badcaps

The "new" unit is a KDM-M6480 480W psu, the 480W number is a typical KDM bullshit claim of course, but the 24A rating on the 12V rail seemed reasonable and the "Active PFC" claim gave me a bit of hope that this was going to be decent-ish....

Garage door RX unit (Cardin S38C) does not short relay to send opening signal
              by CoinCoin88
              Hello everyone,

I'm turning to the Badcaps community to help me troubleshoot the radio Rx card from my (old) garage door opener. While I could just ditch that card and replace the whole system, I first would like to understand "why" it suddenly stopped working, because that's just how I am wired...!

Some basics: the receiver works on a 30.875 Mhz frequency. Yes, I'm aware this is not in use anymore in a looot of places. It does not use any rolling code, it's just a regular dip-switch code that you have to set up on both the receiver and transmitter. The receiver...

Unit runs but no speaker output kenwood KR-6030
              by DrDos
I have finished my work. The new lights come on except the one for stereo, I reversed the bulbs to no affect, anyway, the unit powers on, relay clicks. I have no DC voltage in speaker outputs, I also do not have any AC in the speaker outputs. There is some faint crackling in the speaker. This unit cranks up loud so I had the volume on very low. Everything seems to be fine but I can't really check the switch until I can get sound out of the outputs. I was going to do caps for the power supplys and the tone board but thought if it was cranking loud at one time maybe just leave it alone until it...

              Troubleshooting Optiplex 3080
              by bradcaps
              Hello people,
Our service bay had what appears to be a stereo amplifier that went on the fritz and fried two Dell Optiplex 3080's that were plugged into the same UPS. I never seen such a situation.

Anyways the computers do not power on. A replacement power supply didnt resolve the issue when this occurred a few years ago. I want to try to revive one now.

I plugged the faulty computer into a 40w and 60w dim bulb, which flashed several times before it stopped without any power button interaction. The green LED lite on the PS then went dark afterwards. The PS...

practical courses for troubleshooting pc motherboards
              by blues_spirit
              Hello from France,
mon2 kindly advised me to post a thread to ask the question(s) I'm concerned about. I'm new to the forum and I'm looking for practical courses for troubleshooting pc motherboards especially laptops in Europe, if possible in France. I have been a computer network system administrator and a corrector of administration modules for automated programs under Unix. But I really miss the practical "ops" side of troubleshooting. So I would like to start from the beginning: 1.8V, 3.3V, 5V and 19V tests for example, etc...
Do you think this is feasible for me? I...
