    Bars in video

the Sony CCD-F77 makes a good mid-range stereo 8mm camcorder which is why whe my first one died I promptly got another one. (that and also the abtteries and accessories are compatible with my other handycam and my CCD-V5000)
This replacement works very well except that I'm getting bars in the picture.
    So I troubleshooted:

    To translate...
    Code:
    Video from:
    -CCD to Viewfinder: OK
    -CCD to Video Output: OK
    -Tape to Video Output*: OK
    -Video Input to Viewfinder: OK
    -Video Input to Tape**: OK
    -CCD to Tape: BAD

Pictures: What you see if you record anything from the internal CCD to a tape.
Okay, so something between the CCD and the tape recorder is wonky but what could there be? It's something so specific that it does not affect the video output as well as does not affect the playback of a previously recorded tape. (In other words, any other part of the camera)

*A test pattern was recorded to a blank tape on another camcorder then played back on my F77
**A test pattern was fed into the camera and recorded to a tape, then played back in another camera.

bad cord? that looks like it might be static interference caused by bad shielding.

      just look at the boards,

a very common problem with all old camcorders - specially sony is loads of leaking surface-mount capacitors.

they are a bitch to replace usually because they are all bunched up together.

Sorry. My nose is not tuned to the smell of what a failing cap does smell like.
Can anyone at least give me a general idea where to start looking? At any given time the CCD has a hlaf dozen wires coming off it.

what if a cat actually peed on his?

wait- that still results in a trashed camcorder!

All I can smell are electronics and the crisp smell of PCBs that is evident on NOS computer hardware.
I honest'y do not know what rotten fish smells like.

Does the camera perform same when you warm it up/cool it, or when it runs for a while.

Does it show the same lines when outside (indoor might be a fluorescent lamp interference, but I doubt that)

It's less evident in very low light conditions but in normal light conditions you can see it and in bright conditions it's very obvious.
No, the problem is instantaneous. It does not occur or go away after a period of time.

all the ccd-f series had bad surface mount lytics.
i recapped lots of these units when they were fairly new.
they are not wine.they just get worse with time.

Great. Bd surface mounts. I'm sure though I can get that cured somehow.
Was the CCD-V series also another line with abd lytics? I got a V5000 here that has the same symptoms but can't record video worht a damn (it's garbled).

                              EDIT: "Yes" is the answer.

Sony had produced bad CCD sensors from 2004 to 2006 era. I had to replace one for my friend of friend's. These IC is out of production by now.

Many major makers bought Sony CCD sensors in that time-frame. So this is not isolated to Sony's.

It usually is totally white out after few minutes of use or permanently black, streaking then totally blurry. These are the symptoms for bad CCD. The first camera with funny pink streaks is not this symptom. Second camera you mentioned later is probably this if this is in that time-frame.

                                Cheers, Wizard

The V5000 is from the very early 90's so it's almost a full 15 years before the issue with the CCDs would occur.

I also got a V5000. Can't smell anything when opening the tape deck. All functions are fine, but when I press the Record button, everything is garbled. It also takes some seconds to warm up before it is displaying something in the viewfinder.

I'll try replacing the caps. Hopefully it works again after that. It's a very nice device with a kind of futuristic look. A shame to throw it away.

This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....

I have a Quantum SuperLoader robotic tape library that uses an IBM LTO 7 tape drive which is constantly complaining that it needs cleaning. If you insert a cleaning tape, it performs the clean and resets the cleaning counter to 0 hours. It should only require cleaning every 50 or so working hours but after as little as just 1 hours use it requests cleaning. We've purchased a new cleaning tape along with new LTO backup tapes but that has not resolved the problem.

I have taken the library apart and can see no noticeable signs of dust inside. I have removed the tape drive from the...
