Well I ordered a resonator. I will give that a shot before go slicing the board up to add pots and switches.

i meant buying a breadboard (solder kind) and building it that way.

Gotcha. I was thinking along the lines of reworking the original board and thus being able to use the triacs, comparator, original connector, etc. I am guessing that it would be possible to use two pots to supply 0-5v variable to the input channels on the comparator IC. In that case the lights and fan should dim just as they do now, but with a knob instead of a button and no fancy bar graph.

The sad thing is I could even get the bargraph to work with a good old fashioned analog circuit.

You need a bargraph driver IC and a voltage divider or potentiometer to calibrate it.

yeah, i meant re-use parts from the dead board to make a new circuit on the breadboard. makes reworking in the future less of a problem.

resonators are junk - only good for tv remotes.

              try a 4mhz crystal.
i had a whole bunch of usb keyboards that would stop working after a while - i found they all had a 6mhz resonator.
*but* the pcb was marked for a crystal - fitted crystals and they ran sweet.

It looks like another successful repair! I put the new resonator in and the all the above mentioned issues are gone. I also put in two new proper sized caps (I had swapped in some for troubleshooting that were a higher voltage rating) and put it all back together. I have never really paid much attention to the small anonymous components like the resonator, but can now see how they can cause big problems. Here are digikey part numbers in case you have problems with your broan range hood:

                4mhz resonator w/cap (X902-ND)
                470uf 10v capacitor (P10221-ND)
                470uf 16v capacitor (P10248-ND)

Should cost around $1.50 for these three parts.

Thanks for all the helpful replies on this thread.

On a side note, my TV remote went off into happy-land recently.

Turned out the problem there was also a bad resonator, one of the pins had snapped (why are they thin and flat and easy to break?)

Kitchen range hood not turning on
                      by jl22734
I have a kitchen range hood that recently stopped working. Initially pressing any of the buttons would power on the unit and then immediately power off. I took out the control board and replaced all of the capacitors and everything worked like normal for a few days. Now the buttons on the range hood don't work. The range hood is definitely getting power. When I jump the pins on the back of the board I can get the fan to turn on. It will turn off when I jump the pins again. The LEDs that are on the switches will randomly faintly glow when the fan is on. Any ideas or recommendations on what may...

Resonator - quartz broken - how to find the same (same frequency) ?
                      by corrize
Hello, I have a Fujifilm hybrid camera with an issue : the time don't run. I set 12:00 and 3 min later, the same : 12:00
I saw an obvious root cause : a broken quartz (resonator). But with the box broken, I can't read the marking code. Probably : 464… or A64…
I found on the web a picture of the same camera board but with marking code very different. Probably : A7…5N
I'm searching another one for compare…
Do you have an idea or another way for find the frequency of this resonator please ?

Help Disabling Flash Protection Range Registers on Lenovo P360 Tiny BIOS
                      by abhorsen
                      Hey guys,

Hope you all are doing well. I come here from Win-Raid because I am having issues disabling Flash Protection Range Registers so I can flash my BIOS from within Windows using Intel's IFW tool/using flashrom within Linux, however I cannot due to the above mentioned error.

Here is my thread on Win-Raid detailing the whole process I went through: https://winraid.level1techs.com/t/re...h-gen/95478/27

Essentially I managed to boot into Windows while shorting PINs 1+5 of my audio chip to disable the HAP bit...

                      ATX brown wire sense range
                      by harp
I thinking to modify some ATX ver 1 supply, and wonder what if I connect 10k pot on 12v and center tap on brown wire? What range of 3.3v correction can to expect, or something will blow up if I close to rails, leave narrow 3.3v range?

It is KA7500B ic, but 3v3 sense is connected to TL431, I am not sure there is any connection between.
