    Brands? Series? ... Even pictures?
They're needed to spice up the thread, you know .

Re: I got a hold of some odd caps

The two very large capacitance caps are not designed for filtering, they are closer to batteries characteristics wise.

The high ESR is not a problem for their intended application, low drain memory backup. They've been around a while though....I have two Panasonic "Gold Caps" in my Technics EQ from 1987 and they are 2F each!

But still...1 Farad is big! What Im interested in is your soda can!

Re: I got a hold of some odd caps

The "soda can" caps were pretty common in old computer power supplies. By old I mean 60s-70s equipment and much larger than a PC. The power supplies back then weren't as well designed so they needed those huge caps. I used to have quite a few of them salvaged from old stuff.

The markings on the soda can are :
          SANGAMD
47,000 MFD (same as uf, thats what they used to call it)
          25VDC
          MADE IN U.S.A
Don't know about the large ones because they are lost in my `Giant electronics box'

            lol @ SANGAMD

It's SANGAMO. That oval label with the funky 'O' always confuses people. Google turns up Sangamd capacitor results, so everyone continues to repeat the error.

            Sangamo Electric Company, Springfield, Illinois

Just replaced some 30,000uF/15v ones in a piece of test equipment. Have a pile of the soda cans and a few that are more like Foster's Beer cans.

sangamo has been acqired by Cornell Dubilier long ago.

maybe you find some datasheets here:

i think they have adopted some of their series.

HOLY CRAP! evreyone was so worried about the smoke detector in that thread.
Thats nutthin', infact somtimes our smoke detector does not work because the battery contact isnt that good.

not worried about it, usually it works anyway...i know it when an electrical experiment goes wrong and the house fills with smoke.

Kinda hard to know when you have a short or something in your walls until it starts burning through.

There was a family around here that had that happen to their house. They even had working good smoke alarms, but once it got out of the walls it immediately spread throughout the house. The entire family died. Happened while they were asleep.
