The failure of the shock sensor probably would not cause the drive to fail, or at least it shouldn't. From the fact that crystals should be pretty quiet when not struck, it should look like an open circuit (or a few Kohms). However it may be used to detect vibration of the disk and compensate for it...
Piezoelectric crystals tend to be very reliable and I wouldn't suspect it broken unless physically destroyed.
