Li-Po batteries bulging after deep discharge

You have probably seen lithium-ion polymer (Li-Po) batteries bulge from overcharge, but I have seen such batteries (no-name Chinese units, but not quality units e.g. Sanyo, Samsung etc.) bulge from not being used for a long time during self-discharge.
Could this be caused by an internal reaction (most likely caused by poor cell design) from deep self-discharge?

i just think the technology is that way.
apple laptop batterys bulge & split - i doubt they use cheap no-name chinese packs.

all lithium batteries have issues with the following conditions according to wikipedia:

LiPo cells are affected by the same problems as other lithium-ion cells. This means that overcharge, over-discharge, over-temperature, short circuit, crush and nail penetration may all result in a catastrophic failure, including the pouch rupturing, the electrolyte leaking, and fire.

just great, crapple puts them in an aluminium casing in an aluminium laptop that uses the shell as a passive cpu cooler!!
