Re: Can MOV voltage be measured nondestructively?
MOV's are mushy and follow a log I vs log V curve, so values cover a wide range. There is no sharp knee like a zener diode, but you can estimate the voltage rating using a few mA's test current (limit).
It looks like the voltage rating is where the MOV starts to conduct 1mA DC. So for a 250V (RMS) MOV, that's around 350VDC +/-10%:
Example B60K250 (Fig. 12)
200V 1uA
250V 5uA
300V 30uA
400V 1mA
450V 100mA
500V 10A
so it's 400-500V before the 250V rated MOV really does anything

Re: Can MOV voltage be measured nondestructively?
If you limit current appropriately, it could be possible. My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.Comment

Re: Can MOV voltage be measured nondestructively?
Often, you may want to obtain a likely part number from an unmarked MOV. Using a current limiting resistor (as above) note the a.c. voltage at which the MOV begins to conduct. Reduce that a.c. voltage by the safety margin of your choice - 10 to 20 percent - and you will have the approx. a.c. working voltage of the MOV. The physical size of the MOV will give you a clue to the peak surge current handling capability, which is the other important spec for the part.Is it plugged in?Comment

Re: Can MOV voltage be measured nondestructively?
A DY294 Digital Transistor Tester / Semiconductor Tester should be able to test these. In capacitor mode it raises the voltage until the device breaks down. Some capacitor types are instantly destroyed at first breakdown but electrolytic are not. A MOV won't be destroyed at the limited current it puts out.Comment

by electron_jjHi Everyone, I am new to this forum. I have a Panasonic LED TV which doesnt turn on and is blinking 4 times repeatedly when I turn on the switch. The TV does not respond to the remote control so I had to turn on using the physical switch on the side of the TV. When I turn on the switch the 4 x blinking starts and repeat itself until I turn off the TV. There is a black screen. I turned off the light in the room to check the panel and I think there is no backlight as far as I can tell.

by sam_sam_samI found two capacitors on the board and one of the leads on one capacitor had bad soldering joint and the other joint connections not much better and there were several soldering joints that way to much flux around the joint redid several of them
The capacitors were a non brand that I did not recognize they got replaced and now it does not oscillating between relay but what concerns me a little bit is when the voltage is a little bit low the output voltage is around 130 volts and then drops down to 115 volts this happens around 105 to 108 volts if remember correctly

3+1 Voltage Regulator for IMVP-7/VR12 CPUs
Compliant with IMVP-7/VR12, the ISL95831 provides a complete solution for microprocessor and graphic processor
core power supply. It provides two Voltage Regulators (VRs) with three integrated gate drivers. The first VR can be
configured as 3-, 2- or 1-phase VR while the second output is 1- phase VR, providing maximum flexibility. The two VRs share the
serial control bus to communicate with the CPU and achieve lower cost and smaller board area compared with the two chip approach.

Fail: Does not charge battery, has low voltaje on connector.
Laptop didn't want to turn on, only charge led blinked.
I found PQB5 (mosfet high battery charger) in short, voltaje in +12.6V_BATT was 19 v ...
I changed it, changed PQB6 too and now battery charger voltage is 4.4V but battery is 3 cell, 11.25v, then is very low to charging.
Laptop turns on without battery and works fine, but with battery turns on and turns off inmediately, I suspect battery bad but I don't know... - Loading...
