    Solid state caps v/s Electrolytics?

    Hey guys,

I was wondering if there are any advantages of using SS caps v/s electrolytics. Gigabyte are marketing their newest board (965P-DQ6-6Q) as having "all solid state caps". Are those caps guarenteed to have lower ESR than Electrolytics, or is it marketing bullshit?

Here is a "preview" of the board. Are those Sanyo caps ?

As far as I've seen, Sanyos will often have "SEPC" marked on their tops, while UCC ones will have a little logo above their marking.

The pic you supplied is a little small to be sure, but I've posted a few pics of my board, with emphasis on the caps - perhaps you can compare them to your gigabyte board. (The CPU VRM inputs are 16V UCCs, and the outputs are Sanyo) http://www.liesbeth.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=212

I thought finally, major advance , looked at all pictures of boards, but no solid state caps.
I guess you mean solid polymer.

Arneson, what is the difference between the two?

Thanks for the pictures tiresias. Now, what would these caps be?

        This is Panasonic, right?

        I found a few Tosin's as well:

I'll call it, synthetic capacitance, is a chip performing the functoin of capacitors. It requires support circuitry including small capacitors but the filtering is solid state.
Symantics, solid state at least to me is silicon or germanium or such and that could change any day.

Yep, you got the brands right.

I'd like to see how those Tosins do. I've seen a few working fine in PSUs, but never on a motherboard.
You know there's something wrong when you open up a PSU and are glad to find Teapos.
Why I don't buy cheap cases!

I think this solid polymer hype is somhow marketing, as in generall, is is ok to use al caps, as long as they are from an reputable brand. But anyway, for higher ocing may be there are some benfits, but in generell they are laking in bulk capacitance. In my opinion it would be the best to use those caps as vrm input, and some high capacity al caps as o/p caps. this would be probably the best desing.

I wonder if they stop using GSC crap on all the other (not-the-most-expensive) boards...

But what if GSC starts making their own polymers too?

                    First leaking polymer caps?

Hey guys, I couldn't figure out what the Red Aluminum one was? First pic.

The MB BTW is the new ASUS M2N-E (AM2 non-SLI). I'm building this for my Uni. Next on the list is a "mini" cluster with about 20 computers. Best part is, I get to order the best of the best. For the Cluster, I may go with Kentsfield, depending on if it crunches better than the Socket F Optys.
