    anyway to repair/replace... jackhead?

Is there a way to repair a connection entering a jackhead?

    Shown in the picture below.

This one powers an Acer Aspire One netbook. Testing with a DMM If you bend the cord a certain direction the connection is lost. The power brick on the other hand is good, I bent the cord the other way and it charged up the batteries and power the netbook fine.

Is there a way to repair the connection or replace jackhead?

anyone know what type jackhead this is if I have to replace it?

Cut the plug off and put a new one on. Measure the outside and inside diameter to determine what size of plug is needed. I don't think you can repair it.

The connector is 5.5mm x 1.5mm, with the barrel being (-) and the recessed center contact being (+).

A new power supply isn't much, even from amazon or evilbay. My Acer Aspire 1410 (12.1" display) came with the minimum 30watt. You can upgrade to a higher wattage unit. It'll not charge any faster but it won't work as hard or get as hot.
Stupidity should be a crime, especially for drivers. I have NO patience for them.

To be honest, I'd rather fix the original PSU with a new plug than getting a cheap chinese knockoff, hoping it'll work OK

It may be the 5.5 x 1.7 - see the orange one in the page below, it even says "for acer".

          Here's suggestion :

One of these may also work :

i try to find the laptop dc socket as well to do a cross reference for the correct size, a lot of sellers on fleabay will have the size in the listing then its easier to get the correct plug.

Yep, I took a miniature screw driver and inserted into the connector for reference. I get 1.6mm ID and 5.5mm OD. more like 1.7 tho since it's not a tight fit. I would measure the internal DC jack on the netbook but my caliper is too large to fit the hole.

I went to skycraft surplus here in orlando they didn't have anything that match. Then tried radioshack, which didn't have it, and finally digikey.

I might just buy a new adapter since I can't seem to find a replacement that will fit.

that's actually a common size. go to ratshack with the netbook and do a test fit. it doesn't have to be exact, as the jack has some spring to it.

I think I had to do that to a brick before... just brought in the laptop and started checking the fit.

Most likely yes, but it won't look pretty afterwards (and the repair may not last long, depending on how you fix the plug).
Basically you need to cut all of the plastic on the back side of the plug (a sharp hobby knife is best for this task) to expose the wires and then cut and resolder them if they are broken.

In any case, DO NOT but a cheap no-name replacement power adapter.

                        it's a 1.7mm x 5.5mm x 12mm long. The closes one they had was 5.5mm O.D with 2.1mm I.D and 4.0mm O.D with 1.7mm I.D

I can make anything look pretty, it's just will the repair last long for my customer? I think not one trip or yank and it's fubar.

Would buy but it has what looks like a ferrite core wrapped around it.

Second would be perfect except they want $1.02 for the plug and $4 to ship it so I would have spend 50% of what a new adapter would cost.

Anyways I spent most of today looking for this plug and decided it difficult to find and I am a little weary of buying a plug that says it this size only to find out later it's the wrong one.

I think the safe bet here is getting the one off of amazon that is an exact model I have here.

A ferrite core is a VERY GOOD thing.
It keeps EMI out of the power to your laptop.

Depends on the plug design and how the wires are soldered inside. Also depends on the wire itself - if it's a single insulated wire with wire strands on the outside for ground, then I don't recommend this repair.

Unless the new adapter really is original, don't bother buy one - even if it's under $1. Cheap adapters can be a fire hazard. They also run rather hot, so the caps inside them will likely cook very quickly, thus leaving your customer with a dead adapter.

If you were stuck on Gilligan's island, what you would do is take a clam shell and peel away the vinyl covering on the plug, cut the cord an inch or two shorter, and solder it back on. Then have the professor make you some epoxy to cover the end and fortify the first half inch of cord with some heatshrink tubing.

Seems silly I know, but I have made a VERY shallow 90' plug for the side of an MP3 player like this. Except for the clam shell and epoxy source.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I've had in mind too. I did a similar repair with hot glue (except that my power adapter was still functioning fine, so I didn't need to resolder anything). The hot glue separated from the cable after a while, but it still remains hard near the plug so it still protects the wire. I would have used epoxy, but I didn't have any at the time. This is definitely how you can repair it, though.

Seems silly I know, but I have made a VERY shallow 90' plug for the side of an MP3 player like this. Except for the clam shell and epoxy source.
Can we have Ginger in a tee shirt power the solder iron with the bicycle generator and have Mary Anne toss buckets of water on her for PSU cooling?

I'd like to start out by thanking this forum for providing the info to be able to repair my 15 year old CP1500AVRLCD UPS. Here is all the info I gathered during my trouble-shooting and re-capping.

Like clockwork, I've had to replace the SLA batteries every 4 years. It was about that time and the UPS was acting like it needed new batteries... randomly shutting off with AC present, not being able to charge fully, and poor runtime when AC was removed. So, I replaced the batteries but noticed that it was not charging properly.

I decided to verify that the batteries were...
