    Electric Motor Question....

    All,
    Yesterday in the morning the fan was fine. Its approximately 10 years old. Its one of those high Velocity types.

    In the afternoon I noticed it was not running any longer.

    During the investigation, I confirmed the wiring, confirmed the 3 way switch is fine, the Capacitor measures the correct Microfarads. So I went to the Motor;

    No smell of burnt and it spins very easily. I started to measured the continuity between the 6 wires.

    I have included a diagram from a YouTube video I found but basically the wiring is identical. The only exception is the colors of the wires between the motor and switch are slightly different.

    Anyway am I correct in the assumption that I should not measure continuity between any of the wires (Gray, Red, or Yellow) going to and from the switch\motor?

    Thanks,
    Chris

      Or one of the capacitor wires is open.

        STJ,
        Tried Bypassing it had no change.

        Thanks,

          CapLeaker,
          Confirmed the wiring and even tried spinning the motor by hand to give it a head start. I assume the Capacitor is a starting Capacitor for the motor?

          The Capacitor is 250V 12 MicroFarad Capacitor (Box Capacitor).

          Thanks,
          Chris

            Everyone,
            The way this Fan quit was quite odd.

            Running Fine in the morning and nothing by afternoon...So I started asking the kids if they knew anything.

            My oldest daughter said she was sweeping the hallway and pulled the plug from the surge protector to plug in the sweeper. The surge protector hosts the TV, Blu Ray, Phone charger and bedroom lamps. We commonly unplug the fan or lamp for the weekly bedroom sweeps.

            She said she plugged in the fan after she swept and heard the fan spin up.

            So not sure if the unplugging and restarting the fan was it or the motor maybe demised shortly after trying to restart?

            I did measure the Capacitor out of circuit and it measured 12 Microfarad on my DMM.

            Thanks,
            Chris

                Re: Electric Motor Question....

                All,
                I went a little deeper into the motor;

                sam_sam_sam, as asked the resistance of the Capacitor wires (without the capacitor involved) is 74.4 ohms.

                Next I made a Table of wires Resistance between the remaining 4 wires.

                Remember the wire colors I mentioned previously in the image I pulled from YouTube do not represent my motor but the wiring setup is identical. I updated that previous image to represent the actual colors now and included it with the latest posting.

                I included the resistance Measurements.

                As you can see from the table the Red Wire is open. Also that is my common wire.

                So I started to look at the labeling on the motor. The motor has a label that says it was thermally protected.

                Looking at the motor closely I could see a white component (image included).

                I believe that image is the thermal protector.

                I confirmed this is what is causing the Red to be Open by taking a screwdriver and crossing the two wires going to it. Then measuring my resistance values once again.

                Red -> Blue measures 33.3
                Red -> Grey measures 45.6
                Red -> White measures 53.6

                So my question I guess now is it possible to get another thermal protector or should I by pass it and make it a garage use only fan (monitored fan)?

                Thanks everyone for the help,
                Chris

                  thats a thermal fuse.
                  bypass it and see if everything works
                  if it does, we can find a cheap source of them - pay attention to the markings on it - they com in different temp ratings

                    Nescafe Aeroccino, still fails with new Motor (red flashes only once)
                    by juergenb
                    Hi,

                    i am asking for some Help.
                    I have one of these Nescafe Aeroccino (Milk Frother) things with a bad motor.
                    The Motor didn´t start anymore and internet is full of users just swapping the motor for a Mabuchi RF-500TB-12560.
                    So i got a few of these from Banggood.

                    I swapped the motor and now i have a new fault condition.

                    In a working Frother you would press the start button, it will light red and work for a few minutes.
                    If you press longer it will light blue and just mixup the milk.

                    With the new Motor it just starts...

                    hi there,im having a look at repairing a wood lathe for my dad,(charnwood w821)the problem is when turning up the variable speed control,the motor starts to stop and start by itself,if i continue to turn up the speed it will trip the mcb in the consumer unit,there is also a slight smell of burning from the speed controll box.,Another strange symptom is the lathe can be unplugged from the mains after switching it off and the motor will spin a couple of times by itself,so far ive put a new speed controll potentiometer on and new motor brushes,ive also tested the motor windings and everything looks...

                    DMHC DC Motor Controller for Electric Quad
                    by Bloopeta
                    Hi, I was given a Funbikes 96 36v 800w Electric Quad.
                    Problem is the guy who had it connected the batteries wrong. It has 3 12v batteries in series, but he connected the 3 batteries in a complete circuit (diagram attached to explain, please excuse my drawing lol) and connected them to the quad, and said the motor controller made a fizzing noise and smoked lol.

                    Funbikes no longer stock a replacement controller, and I am unable to locate one online with the part number.

                    I opened up the controller, and immediately could see some blown caps, so I have replaced...
