    Sort of general capacitor questions

I am only working on motherboards and LCD monitors.

    1) Are the Rubycon MBZ and MCZ interchangeable? From what I have read here so far the MCZ is the best one but are the MBZ's good enough?

    2) Does the physical size of the capacitor matter as long as they physically fit?

Two examples of what I am looking to do:

    A) Replace Nichicon HN(M) 820uf 6.3v 8mm x 20mm with Rubycon MBZ 8mm x 23mm

    B) Replace Nichicon HN(M) 1500uf 6.3v 10mm x 13mm with Rubycon MBZ 8mm x 20mm.

    Thanks for any help!

Re: Sort of general capacitor questions

You can replace MBZ with MCZ, since MCZ is rated better than MBZ. The reverse is not always doable.

Let's look at what you want to do.

    A) Replace Nichicon HN(M) 820uf 6.3v 8mm x 20mm with Rubycon MBZ 8mm x 23mm

This is probably okay. HN is equivalent to MCZ. But, the MBZ in question here is physically bigger, so the larger size makes up for the difference in ESR and ripple.

I have seen the 8x20mm 6.3V 820uF HN and 8x23mm 6.3V 820uF MBZ used interchangeably on Intel boards.

However, that size of MBZ is an oddball size. It exists, but it next to impossible to find. My suspicion is that it was a custom order for Intel, as I have only seen them on Intel boards. Where are you getting these 6.3 V 820 uF MBZ from? If you're re-using used capacitors it is not advised due to the fact that they reform and may no longer perform at their originally rated voltage.

    B) Replace Nichicon HN(M) 1500uf 6.3v 10mm x 13mm with Rubycon MBZ 8mm x 20mm.

Let's look at the specs for HN and MBZ here.

HN specs for 10x12.5mm - ESR: 18 mohm Ripple: 1760 mA
MBZ specs for 8x20mm - ESR: 19 mohm Ripple: 1870 mA

So yes, the specs are close enough that this replacement will work. However, this again doesn't appear to be a standard size for 6.3V 1500uF MBZ based on the datasheet.

Rubycon capacitors are sometimes the target of counterfeiters. If you'd like assistance determining if yours are genuine, feel free to post some pictures of them from the sides, top, and bottom.

Re: Sort of general capacitor questions

one note on mcz (or any other caps):

DO NOT BUY YOUR CAPS ON EBAY!!!! MOST are fake!!! there is one seller that is SUPPOSEDLY legit, but i still would avoid ebay.

reason i say is i remember topcat (the admin) getting some from a customer from ebay there were horrifically bad fakes. figured i better get this out of the way before anybody screws up...

Air Con PCB repair : some general question
        by dicky96
        Hi guys
I've been getting more air con controller boards of various brands for repair - mainly the ones from the outdoor compressor unit and I realise I have a lot of gaps in my specific knowledge, while being pretty good at electronic repair in general.

Does anyone know of any good resources for information on this sort of repair? I'm hoping here there will be some guys who are experienced in this. I'd specifically like more info on how the controller PCB works, because I expect they are all pretty much the same, and especially how it communicates with the indoor unit (protocols,...

        A very general question...

A very general question, when inject voltage and board draw over 4a and pull down 5v to 1v, but nothing is hot under thermal camera. Can I assume it is layer short? or it could be something very typical that I just have no idea of being a noob.

Infamous Rubycon MFZ... Current recommended replacements???
        by bjs59
What we have here today is an Intel DG33FB motherboard, circa 2007... I need to replace some of the caps on this board... From what I have found, one of these caps was sort of well known here back in the day as they were used in XBoxes and XBox 360s as well....They are the Rubycon MFZ series, in particular the 6.3 v 3300uf 10mm X 20mm... I have found a seller on Amazon, The Capacitor Store, that has them listed but I have a hard time believing these are genuine pieces... The original recommendation was to replace any bad ones with Nichicon HZ series since the Rubycon MFZ's were a custom product,...

General Question(s) & Question About USB Jtag u-Link NT
        by Whale linguini
I'm not sure if I am posting this in the right spot, I don't have any question or anything specific to one board. I am *kinda* starting out with this kind of work. I have been IT in one role or another for my job the last 30 years, and I am familiar enough with basic board stuff generally speaking. So, I dunno for example if someone told me to find a uart header, or flash some generic tsop8 something, etc I understand that kind of stuff. Point being, I'm not 100% clueless. I just don't have the specific knowledge when it comes to some of these more advanced repairs. I actually have spent the last...

General Question - Rebuilding Lithium Ion Battery Packs on Mobile Devices/Laptop
        by nobbnobb1
        Hi guys,

Just a general question. Usually on mobile devices/laptops the battery pack consists of lithium ion cells with their +/- tabs welded onto the controller IC. I'm wondering, in general if it can be assumed that one can find a replacement lithium ion cell, is it ok to simply re-use the old controller IC in an attempt to re-build the pack? Or is that controller somehow paired to the cells from the factory?

From my experience it sometimes seems to be hit or miss. Not sure if this is true, but sometimes it's almost as if the controller IC will go to a failsafe...
