you probably need that suspended on a retracting steel cable over the work area,
holding that up with a 500g roll of solder stuck to it will kill your wrist really fast!
Well, the picture shown has a very small roll. I'd imagine were someone to use this, it would be worth rolling a small spool of solder.
Could be lazy, or could be really nice to have a free hand. I often put my hands in major contortions trying to hold a part, hold the iron and add the solder at the same time.
Edit: It's actually surprising that I don't burn myself more often than I do.
I bought on of these are all right but they are not temperature controlled and you have roll up the solder your self unless you want to buy the small rolls of solder from them so they will fit
sam: Yeah, it appears to be temp controlled, that would certainly be a deal killer if it weren't.
eccerror: Doesn't look much heavier than my desoldering gun, except for the weight of solder. If it actually works well, I could see it having to be held for much shorter periods of time.
blue-tack on the parts side does not burn - it just softens.
dont pull it off while it's hot or it leaves bits behind.
another trick i use - masking tape holds a whole line of resistors or leds down,
i use a lot of cheap masking tape!
one thing i cant stand - people who bend component legs to hold them in - those fuckers have never had to remove old parts that have had that done to them!
btw, if that gun has a really strong feed system then maybe you not need the reel on it - just run it down some slippery tubing (not rubber) to the reel at the other end of the power cable.
I'm guilty, I bend the component legs, only a little bit though, I don't fold them over like some I have seen. Just enough to cause some friction in the hole.
That's a good point about not needing a spool. I'd rather have a small spool though, one fewer thing to tangle. I could even print a small spool on my 3d printer if I really needed it. I doubt it would add all that much weight.

Amen!
Kind of funny I sometimes still bend them... well, no more than two pins and no more than about 30 degrees. Then when one pin is tacked down, unbend and solder each of the remaining pins, and then try to undo the bend in the first pin... heh.
