    Re: Transitor/ESR tester dead

I found the same thing on AliExpress:

    http://www.aliexpress.com/item/10-Pi...rchweb201560_4

I got my tester mounted in a metal half box that came from a dead TV that housed a G-Star decoder or some such thing. I put the battery clip on the back which props the tester up at a good angle.

      that's a nice fit.

you should consider something to protect the display though - specially as the cable is exposed.

          That's very good.

Yeah, I'm not completely satisfied with my box yet either, but it's ok for now. I wasn't planning on using a metal box, I just happened to find it in a junk box and it's the right size. I know the disp cable is exposed, the tape over it is already starting to peel off just from what little handling it's had.

Have you fitted the rotary yet? I'm about to order one. Also what programming interface are you going to use? I thought you posted some info about that device before but I can't find it.

              Will this ISP programmer work?

                Re: Transitor/ESR tester dead

                that's exactly the right programmer.

my rotary got delivered to a friends place, i wont be able to get it till later this week.
i get parcels sent to a friend because he's always in to answer the door - it has it's bad points when i want something fast!

                about the programmer,
you need to build of buy a 10pin to 6pin adapter.

i built one with a 10pin socket from an old pc serial port and a 2x5 connector from an old pc case usb board.

Yeah I know I need a 6pin header, I'll dig one up. Thanks for the link but which software package to use under Linux, AVRDude or BASCOM-AVR?

for Linux you just need avrdude - it should be in your distro repository.
                      what linux is it?

those links were for win users.

Wow, I'm jealous, that tester is so clever!
I thought you'd need to use much more circuitry to measure ESR ... but this thing measures ESR and more, with less!

Though I did spot that it says:
"You should not expect very good accuracy of measurement results, especially the ESR measurement
and the results of inductance measurement are not very exact."

I also see that it doesn't use a frequency of 100kHz to measure the ESR.

I keep some RF shields as well. They can be soldered to (not aluminum!), and I have some shears to cut the metal into whatever size/shape I need.

Yeah, it is not as accurate as a better ESR meter but it is close enough for my use. I really like mine.

                                accuracy is improving,
there is a new calculation method being tested right now.
i'm not upgrading till they finish testing it though - i'm not their beta-tester!

also, you can change from an 8Mhz to 16Mhz crystal to improve test accuracy at the expense of battery life.

i wonder how accurate these ebay testers are the compared to a proper esr tester has anyone tried to find out i wonder.

You can use for example 1% 0.1 Ohms resistor to see how close it is.

resistance is accurate to atleast one - maybe 2 decimal points.

that's not the same as ESR though if the tester uses a different frequency from the factory making the datasheets - which is the case.

I've seen several of these testers that show they can be used as signal generators up to 2Mhz.
Does anyone have any insight to why they don't measure ESR at 100Khz then, sounds like it should be easy to do...?
