How not to Damage an Oscilloscope

    Hello.
I have jut got my first analogue oscilloscope. An Isotech 620 20MHz.

I want to learn how not to damage it, and I found instructions on the internet obscure.
They talk about ground, earth, floating ground, this, that....
But they don't actually say anything anything useful so far.

    I want to know:
Don't connect exactly this to exactly there or it blows up.

For example, I am tracing a signal from a function generator in an audio amp, or testing for voltages in different parts of a circuit.
I want to know what not to connect it to. The instructions on the internet have no precise instructions and they were too general.

I have read things on the difference between negative, ground, and so on, and I still don't understand it.

Could someone just spell it out for me.
How not to blow up the oscilloscope.

I figured, just measure the voltage with a multimeter and check the maximum voltage and current rating for the oscilloscope before using the oscilloscope, but then the internet says something about ground that makes this idea seem useless.

    Background on me:
I completed a short video course (~25h) on electronic repair. I have a physics BSc. I have dabbled in electronics since I can't remember, I have read a few electronics and radio books, but never took a proper certified course. I wouldn't say that I understand even 1/20th as much that a good electronic engineer does.

dont connect the scope probe ground clip to anything other than ground on what you test.
thats the main thing - be carfull with psu's that the output ground really is ground.

someone can post a like to the eevblog video i hope

and always keep your probe(s) set to x10

There is eevblog video about this
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaELqAo4kkQ
but I am very sure that you see it already

Yes, the problem is with ground, and to help save your equpment in lab is using some isolation transformer 1:1 ratio. But, if you measure two chanel simultaneously, the ground must be the same, not different potencial.
Be avare of hot and cold ground also, it is different.

Before you put ground clip on whatsoever, you may measure voltage between to be sure that is the same potential.

Also, if you living from repair, it is also handy to have battery scope near by.

          Or a differential probe.

PS5 - long screw damage, via to ground layer short?
            by Prott
            Hello dear Badcappers,
I came across a PS5 that was longscrewed. The screw went through the HDMI IC (which I replaced + repaired the traces it damaged), however the screw also bend the board and slightly cracked it on the other side. It still seems like it could be fixable though as the area might not have lots of traces going through it (fingers crossed).

Can somebody, please, measure their board and tell me if my assumption of an inner short between the via and ground layer is correct? These 3 pads have almost no resistance. I would like to make sure those are not some data...

            Hello.

First, I would like to extend my wishes for a Happy New Year to everyone.

... so I got this notebook for repair. The ntb is not turning on. A small amount of water was spilled on the keyboard and I found only 2 dried spots, patches on the motherboard. One around Mosfet PQ5302 but is not damaged and the second on JEDP1 connector.

            I measured:

            Mosfets:
            PQ5301 PIN:4 25,35V
            PQ5908 PIN:5 GT_PH shorted to the ground
PQ5902 PINs 1-4 shorted to the ground

            Coils:
            PL5901 shorted to the ground
            PL5902 shorted...

            Hello everyone,

I recently picked up a laptop that was about to be thrown away to try to repair it. I've tested quite a few things, but I don't know where to look anymore. Could you please help me?

            Brand: Asus Vivobook
            Motherboard reference: x421da, Rev 2

            Context:
The person who gave it to me mentioned it might have been exposed to water, but they weren't sure. After opening it up, I couldn't find any signs of water damage or oxidation on the motherboard.

The first thing I did was to connect the PC to a power supply: 19V stable and...

            Problem

This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....

            by Green Probe
Hello, I have an Alienware m15 R5 Ryzen, P109f002, with motherboard GDL56 LA-K453P Rev:1.0, Ryzen 9 5900HX, RTX 3070. I got it due to it having liquid damage. I am quite new to chip-level repair, and this is my second post, so please be kind with my incompetence. The charging IC is an ISL95522ah in HPB mode as far as I'm aware. I've been using a schematic for a LA-K455PR10_0525A that is available in the forum, and it seems to match for the most part. If it's okay I can link the schematic, or insert the pertinent page into my post.

It had some crusty areas that I've cleaned up....
