    Dell 2007WPF Flickering Off

My trusty Dell monitor is having issues and flickering off, sometimes for minutes at a time. The front panel buttons still glow yellow as usual, so power is still going through. When it flickers off and the dvi input is disconnected, it doesn't show the usual "no input signal" image so I'm pretty sure the problem is isolated to the monitor.

After much effort I managed to take it apart (I'm a newbie) but can't readily identify any points of failure.

Here we go. (I just realized the backs are useful as well. I'll those up soon if these are not clear).

It looks like one (next to the middle inverter transformer) of the 3 caps on the inverter board has domed top, or is it just the reflection.

BTW, when it flickers off, does the LED on the front panel also flick off?

No the LED on the front panel stays steady the whole time.

Are you referring to the inverter transformer in the first picture and the two small black domes near the power supply plug on the right hand side?

OK, the first picture is the power supply board, the second picture is the inverter board and 3 black inverter transformers. Now, do you see the cap with domed top?

it is domed, the 3rd side-angle pic confirms it.

goto say btw, i think that's the best set of foto's i'v seen someone post.

@stj Thanks, I read a few posts and knew you guys need good photos to help

Just an old nikon coolpix s6200 point and shoot I had lying around.

I took a few more picks of the inverter to make sure. If it is indeed bloated, you think a swap could fix it? Does it sound like its the source of the problem I described?

Can you visually tell if that fuse is dead?

I also included pictures where there's some glue. How would you go about removing the glue to check the components underneath?

I would replace all 5 on that inverter board since we already see that you have bad caps. You have to use Ohm meter to check the fuse,

I'm not technical to do it on my own so I'll have to take it in to a shop / repair guy. If the cost is much higher than a replacement, do you think its safe to go with this: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-...557005607.html

Would you go for a used part or try to scrounge for a new board?

This is a great example of different options for different people.
For me, I'd simply replace those caps, and I'd pay 5 to 6 bucks at the most.
That board from Aliexpress appears to have the same Elite caps; so it will most likely fail again someday. But at least it will work for you.
But if some repair shop is going to charge you $25 at least to repair it. Well, who knows.

If you can find somebody to solder the new caps for $10 or $15, that'd probably be the best option.

What brand of caps might you use? The Elite, while they did fail, that was after 8 years.

actually 8 years is not bad considering some I have seen
                        part number P12383-ND at digikey,com for the 220 x 25
Not sure what size the two small ones are ?

as Lumberjack said (no telling how long a used one will last)

and while it is apart, I would do the power supply too

Great news. Found a local who said he can fix the panel for me. I did forget to mention to use quality caps, hopefully he knows better.

Thanks everyone. Yall been awesome diagnosing this. I will update later. Now hopefully I haven't forgotten how to put it back together...

Good news and bad news. The capacitors were replaced. All 3 big ones but the problem persists. It's so depressing, I really thought I had it in the bag.

As you can see, monitor is on and power button is yellow (its orange when computer is off) but screen is black.

                              Any other ideas?

Anyone think this might be related to my PSU + GPU?

                                1) check fuse on inverter board.

                                2) verify new inverter caps are correctly installed.

                                3) re-seat wiring harness on inverter.

                                4) re-seat inverter ccfl connectors.

                                5) measure voltage at fuse on both sides with respect to ground.

Try it in a dark room or look at the monitor from the back (this might show light leaking out through some small holes

post a full picture of the back ?

It sure does looks like the backlights are on. Did you put the LVDS cable back in place correctly?

Might be weak bulbs, could be a power supply issue which is why I recommended changing those caps too while it was apart
