Vestel LED junk (Techwood 17MB82 chassis with VES315)

Ah, it didn't take too long for me to come across one of these...
Techwood set, using a 17MB82 main board and VES315 LED-backlit LCD panel. Utter crap TV.

Symptoms were, no picture, has sound, no backlight. Can see image on screen.

Checked LED supply, fires up briefly then collapses so tore down to panel level suspecting O/C LED. One large tab driver on panel, seems to integrate LVDS decoders too. Have to be careful, as once front of TV removed the panel is not supported at all, there is no internal metal chassis LCD panel, the LCD is built right into the case. Lovely.

Found of the LEDs, one shorted 17 ohms both ways, and one open circuit in different areas of the circuit, others test ok (my meter will make them glow on diode test with >3V O/C), although there are only 22 in total. Set is approx 18 months old, so how about that 50,000 hour lifespan? Yeah.

Ended up scraping the soldermask off the strip to test the LEDs, can't seem to remove the lenses without breaking them, and yes, it's those LEDs we all see failing in other sets.

The guy I bought it off was remarking how it was funny the remote operated his new TV, a Polaroid. Some people can't seem to put two and two together and are forever trapped in the cycle of buying crap, somehow thinking that X crap is better than Y crap because oh well I just got unlucky that last time.

At least it has TWO strips in stead of one.

Soldered 2.2 ohm resistor across bad LED and got it to work.

Resistor drops about 25mV so LED current is only 11mA at backlight low, which is surprisingly low.

TV power on time ~8,600 hours, given it's only 18 months old I'm kinda surprised someone can watch that much TV, and it's lasted longer than I'd expect the average Vestel to manage. That's basically 16 hours of TV a day, or it gets left on all the time at least.

Was testing LEDs wrong, not on max brightness. They actually have about 400mA through them (0.87V drop across 2.2R resistor)

So each LED dissipates approx 3.5V * 0.4A = 1.4W. No way an SMD3528 LED can last that long dissipating that much power.

So now I know why they fail. I will simply have to turn down the backlight current, perhaps modify PSU for lower current limit for CC output.

Bonus thermal image of how hot they get. With the panel off.

Yea. Lifted some of the current sense resistors to set current to 200mA. LEDs now run at 50degC which I now feel comfortable with, not much dimmer (50% less light, but human eye is non linear so it still looks ~70-80% bright)

Thermal camera is a Seek Thermal device for Android, works with my Samsung Galaxy S4 phone. About $200 USD, with a $20 laser cutter lens for macro capability (ZnSe transparent to IR.)

Best shots I can get. There are some video reviews on the internet.

One thing I've noticed is that when I first got it, image performance was quite average, but over time is has massively improved. The image is surprisingly good, the sensor has a high resolution (about 200x150 pixels, high for a thermal camera) but a lot of noise so with low temperature differences -- less than a few degrees -- it's not so good.

Here's the video footage I got from the repair of the smart Samsung set...

                                Hi there everyone

I was wondering if I could get a little help. Back in November my wife and I bought a Techwood 55AO9UHD (running on the Vestel mb230 board) and it's been brilliant... except for one thing. We're unable to get the phone remote app to work.

I've contacted Techwood's Support line and they have kindly provided me with a copy of the firmware that was meant to fix the issue... of course it did not. The Virtual Remote is turned on in the TV setting but it's not really making a difference.

I also run a Home Assistant Server and though I'd...

                                Hi there,

My mother in law gave me an Aya TV, to take a look if I could do something to repair it.

At startup, LED constantly blinks and no image is shown (even if I light the screen, broken backlight is not the problem), also +12V power rail is fine.

After some research, it seems that NOR flash often fails on this mainboard, I have found the procedure to force flash upgrading with a USB key connected to mainboard USB port, pressing "OK" button on the remote and plugging the TV power cord.

Flash upgrade didn't seem to work,...

Vestel tv, how to flip the image?

Hello everyone from Italy, I'm here to ask for help on a Vestel TV, I've had a Vestel TV branded "XD" with a broken screen for years, but now I've found a Telefunken (still Vestel but older) and I've mounted the panel on the "XD" TV, it works, but the screen is upside down, given that Vestel does not allow you to rotate the image from the service menu, does anyone know how to solve the problem? the original panel is marked ves315WNDS-2D-N12 while the main board 17mb110, the panel I mounted instead in the tv (from the telefunken) is a ves315WNDA-02. ... It is not worth repairing...

Help with Bush Tv (Vestel 17mb95m Mainboard)
                                by FlailingEngineer
Hi, I was recently given a Bush Smart TV by a friend and the main board seems to be hanging on by a thread.

Before we get to that, my first obstacle was figuring out the model number since the back sticker has gone for a walk. Upon taking off the back case, I noticed the following Vestel parts, 17MB95m mainboard, 17IPS71 (what I'd assume is power supply) and a VES420UNVL-3D-S02 display panel. After doing some research I think the TV I have is a Bush ELED42240FHDCNTD3D, based on the matching image here (https://www.manualslib.com/manual/11...td3d.html#manu...
