    Corsair VX450 recap question

    I'm recapping my Corsair VX450 due to age. From 2008, it's 6-1/2 years old now. The PSU works fine, loafing along at ~150-200W output.
    The caps are all United Chemi-Con, mostly KY and a few bigger KZE's, primary KMQ and one Rubycon YXG.

    The outputs have a single 1,000uF 16V KY on each, which seems small
    KZE ESR 23m 1.82A ripple 4,000hrs lifetime D=10mm
    KY ESR 46m 1.40A ripple 7,000hrs lifetime D=10mm

    The KY's have higher ESR but longer lifetime specs than the KZE.
    I'm not sure what to go with. Any recommendations? I'm tempted to upsize the O/P caps to maybe 1,500-2,200uF (D=12.5mm) if they'll fit.

    The PSU is made by Seasonic, inside looks like the Antec Earthwatts 430W, CX400W from 2008 etc.

      Don't bother recapping it. The original caps should easily have another 5 or more years life left in them. Japanese caps last practically forever in a well designed power supply.
      I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

      No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

          I had to do a double take when the title read VX450. I remembered that unit as having all Japanese caps.

          c_hegge is absolutely right.

          The only thing that causes me to grimace when looking at those pics is the cheap Chinese organic glue that Corsair spec'd for that particular unit. Still, I wouldn't muddle. You're going to end up breaking something and regretting that you ever posted in the first place.

              Bear in mind too, that you actually have at least two caps on all of the outputs. The larger ones behind the wires are on the output filtering too.

                  Yeah it's from when Corsair was making their name (2008)- afterwards they cheaped out on PSU caps.

                      KY and KZE are good series caps from United Chemi-con.

                      If you leave your computer plugged into the AC outlet all the time, but turned off, you may want to investigate the 5V standby capacitor.

                      When I get dead power supplies, almost 90%+ of the time, the 5V standby capacitor is obviously bloated. I attribute that to people turning off the computer, but not realizing that 5V standby is always present if plugged into an AC outlet.

                      When I turn off my equipment, it is done via power bar.

                          Even so, the 5vsb caps should be fine for a number of years too if they are Japanese parts. I've seen OSTs hold up OK for 5 years in the Antec EA-500 (which is otherwise identical)

                              good caps in there. should be good for 10 years. I would take a few out and measure them to be safe

                                  I ended up recapping the PSU, as it has over 50,000hrs on the +5VSB portion. I didn't want to risk drama with my new mobo/CPU over $10 of capacitors.

                                  Turns out, all the old Chemi-con caps tested fine- ESR is good, and I'm sure they would be good for years as c_hegge said.

                                  Replaced with same Chemi-con (KZE, KY) parts purchased from Digikey, and was surprised the 1,000uF 16V parts are made in china while the rest are made in Japan.

                                      Probably recapped it way too early. Those caps would easily do 15 years. I mean, I have old (vintage?) audio gear with 25+ year old caps that are still pretty much in spec. Even the caps in my CRT monitors from the late 90's are still holding up - and those are 85C -rated caps running in somewhat hot monitors.

                                          Not probably, but for sure. There was no reason for that at all.
                                          Less jewellery, more gold into electrotech industry! Half of the computer problems is caused by bad contacts

After an undefined period of operation, my PC will either suddenly restart or, in some cases, it won't start at all until I disconnect the power cable and reconnect it.                                                           Here’s another motherboard that needed a full recap: an ASUS P5GC-MX.
                                                          This one was gifted to me some years ago by user Pentium 4, along with a few other goodies. It actually came in working order with no bulging or leaking caps. However, I noted there were United Chemicon KZG caps everywhere on the motherboard. The CPU VRM output (CPU V_core) was the only exception: it had only 2x KZG. The rest was 6x UCC TMV 4V 680 uF caps… which aren’t any good news either.

                                                          So here is what the motherboard looked like with its original caps:

                                                          I've been seeing a lot of cheap-looking (but not always so cheap) no-name AGP video cards on eBay for a while. They started popping up quite a bit when the market for AGP cards became more alive all of a sudden due to interest in “retro” PCs. One thing that struck me about these cheapo cards is that they almost always seem to come with garbage caps - including the abominable Sacon FZ. That aside, though, I've been wondering about the rest of the quality (or lack of?) on these cards. So I decided to satisfy my curiosity yet again.

                                                          I’m looking for someone in the Northeast to do a full electrolytic capacitor recap on a working Dell Dimension XPS T450 motherboard (it's an Intel 440BX, Slot 1). The board runs mostly fine but is beginning to freeze after warm reboots (turns back on for 30 secs or so and then freezes up but is perfectly fine after 12 hr cool down).

                                                          I’d be sending just the bare motherboard (CPU, cards, bracket, battery all removed). I’m located in Chadds Ford, PA and happy to ship within the US.
