thats true with some things. but firefox is just help -> check for updates -> install and boom

fact is linux has auto update too, but its on the OS level (package/kernel) updates which includes firefox. other ways is to: use the package manager, or download the tarball yourself from mozilla and install it manually. I wish the linux version had the self-update feature within itself

haha, its funny they released a new version today, after weeks of nothing. used to only a few months ago I saw a new update every week or so

      autoupdate is unwise in Linux,
one morning you'l find 300meg of stuff downloading because someone patched KDE or something.

      @acstech, isnt CENTOS just de-branded redhat/fedora?

        No,,, I didn't.
Did you hear the mind numbing ZOOooOOMMM of a large aircraft passing over when you read that?

I backed up to ver 3.0.11 and held because the newer versions had too many memory leaks. It does all I need, so why update?

        Saw this.

CENTOS is REbranded Redhat Enterprise without the paid support.

What I thought they (Redhat) were doing is using Fedora as the bug testing and fixing release, then incorporating the stabilized stuff into RHEL. Then CentOS takes the RHEL source and compiles it for a free no-support release.
A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.

              That's right.

But Centos-admin has nothing to do with Redhat-admin.
              Different organizations all together.

They have to remove all the stuff that says Redhat and change it to Centos to avoid copyright issues and so forth.
That's why it's 'rebranded' vice unbranded or debranded.

Re: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - WOW!

last-gen abit boards were nice, but had some really strange flaws..
my own IP35-P has the AHCI mode in the BIOS (updated to the newest one).
however... when i first got that board, it had a "NOT FOR RESALE" BIOS with "Version: X" on it.. right out of the box.. wth?

on topic: i might try out linux again. got a couple boxes standing around doing nothing but collecting dust. and a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo with a Gigabyte G33 Board and 2GB DDR2-800 should be up to the job
i wonder if the onboard Ti Firewire stuff and my Abit AirPace PCIe x1 WiFi card (Atheros chipset.. dunno the model #) work out of the box..

Re: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - WOW!

I'm waiting to try out linux again. I did have an old PC (nforce 4 4400+, so still decent) running Mint, but it died.
I built a new PC that's my gaming and windows box, and I have a nofrce3 4200+ that would make a perfect 'nix box because there's no windows drivers for it after XP anyway!

But I use that for work, and prefer to use some software on it that's not available on
linux and I've tried every alternative, they're all crap (was testing with the NF4 system before it died).
So not making the move until I play with WINE and learn more about that, because a 'nix OS only makes sense to me if I can run some windows software unfortunately.

                    texas firewire should be fine,
for atheros, i'd need a chipset number, but high chance of sucess.

i'v had the "no resale" bios thing too,
it's usually beta - the latest from the web.

I have an Atheros PCMCIA wifi card and two Toughbook CF-51's to checkout once the AC adapter gets here.
                      I'll give it a try.

Great to hear. I'm still using 9.04 seemed to be some optical drive issue with 9.10.

Is there a new version of the Flash player for Linux? I was told there is a version with video acceleration coming. The lack of video acceleration in the current version is a major drawback for Linux users as Flash is the default player of choice on the Web and can't be overridden any more with Mplayer.

the version on mine didn't match any version available from abit (used MD5 hash to compare it to all BIOS versions for my board that i could find)

Did you get the board new or used? And was it very close to when Abit went under? There is a beta 18 bios, never officially released, with that message. I have it flashed on my PC as it added support for E0 stepping 45nm CPUs. Before that, the E0 stepping CPU wouldn't report temperatures to the bios correctly, resulting in shut downs.

So, if you got it used, I bet the previous owner flashed the beta bios. If you got it new right at the end of the company, maybe Abit used their dying breath to flash it to the beta bios.

If you got it new, and a decent amount of time before Abit went under, then yeah...no idea.

"We have offered them (the Arabs) a sensible way for so many years. But no, they wanted to fight. Fine! We gave them technology, the latest, the kind even Vietnam didn't have. They had double superiority in tanks and aircraft, triple in artillery, and in air defense and anti-tank weapons they had absolute supremacy. And what? Once again they were beaten. Once again they scrammed [sic]. Once again they screamed for us to come save them. Sadat woke me up in the middle of the night twice over the phone, 'Save me!' He demanded to send Soviet troops, and immediately! No! We are not going to fight for them."

Re: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - WOW!

Yes, there is an official 18. There's also a beta 18, which I guess is more of 18+ as it includes E0 stepping support. The official bios 18 supports 45nm in C0 stepping only. I found this out building two IP35 Pro systems...one for me and a twin for a friend. I ordered E8400s for both of them. One E8400 was C0 and worked flawlessly, the E0 one not so much.

Getting back to Ubuntu... I tried the Ubuntu CD on my IP35-E computer on the workbench. It detects the hard drives fine, where as earlier versions did not.

There are a few things people have used to get the old version to work, but I'm pretty clueless when it comes to *ix operating systems, so I never gave them a go. I program on HP-UX at my day job, so I know how to use it. However, the IT guys take care of all the behind the scenes stuff, so I've never had a chance to mess around with more advanced things.

I'll have to repartition some stuff and get around to installing Ubuntu one of these days when I have time. Having my own linux system would be a good learning experience, as I haven't yet convinced myself to install it on my primary computer.

i bought it as "NOS" so to say..
a guy on ebay was selling stuff from a shop that closed down..
board was in original packaging and sealed. so never used.
note that this is the abit IP35P or IP35-P .. not the IP35-E

there were only 2 BIOSes on the Abit site for that board. both dated from 2008
                                    http://www.abit.com.tw/page/en/downl...ET_TYPE=LGA775
none of them matched the MD5 hash of the "not for resale" BIOS that was on mine.
i still have that NFR BIOS backed up somewhere.. i think i'm gonna flash it someday and check for the build date and stuff. would be kinda strange if i "updated" to the latest BIOS available on their website, and the NFR BIOS was actually newer than that..

                                    but it's a neat board
and wasn't really expensive either. paid like.. 25euros (about 30US$) shipped back then. bought it as a temporary replacement for my dying Gigabyte P35-DS4..
well.. that "temporary" replacement is working fine for almost 2 years now.. lol
haven't had a single problem with it. running a Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4 @ 3.2 at the moment (had it at 3.6 before.. but summer temps + aircooling.. mhh.. not really..)

It goes alpha -> beta -> final.
If the beta had something and the final didn't they took it back out.

Re: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - WOW!

Okay. I figured out where the confusion was coming from with the bios versions. I think the confusion stemmed from talking about the IP35-E until Scenic posted about the IP35 Pro, at which point I was talking about that one.

I can't edit my last post any more, so I have to post a new one. I had some incorrect info in my earlier post, and don't want to mislead anyone by leaving incorrect info out there.

                                        IP35 Pro has an released bios 17 (28 May 2008), beta version 18 (20 Oct 2008). Released 17 has C0 45nm support. Beta 18 has E0 stepping support.

IP35-E has an official bios 18 (30 May 2008) with C0 support. I've never found anything that fully supports E0 stepping for that board.

So, there's an official bios 18 for IP35-E, beta 18 for IP35 Pro. I've tried cross-flashing them to bring the newer bios to the IP35-E. Didn't work out well at all...not that I was really expecting it to.

uhm.. even more confusion... IP35P and IP35 Pro are 2 completely different boards alltogether..

                                          IP35P (the one i have)

and to make matters "worse".. even more IP35's..
                                          IP35 Pro XE (eXtreme Edition?!)

IP35V (basically an IP35P with ICH7 instead of ICH9 southbridge)

                                          plain IP35

                                          and finally the IP35-E

from the basic component side of view it seems they're mostly identical.
                                          - all of them have Marvell GBit ethernet (even the lowest-end IP35V)
                                          - all of them seem to have the crappy JMicron IDE/SATA controller (for additional ports)
                                          - some have Ti (?) firewire, some don't
                                          - southbridge varies between models (ICH7/9/9R)
                                          - northbridge is the dame (d'oh)

i'd say that's enough confusion for today

edit: am i the only one who finds it kinda sad that abit shut it's doors before their IP45 series boards came out?
