Re: Favourite Computer Components
Pity samsung don't make HDDs anymore.
I've had nearly every brand (conner, quantum, seagate, maxtor, fujitsu, IBM, hitachi, WD), some were good, some had a bad model and nearly all of them had at least one drive failure for me, or got really really noisy.
But all 4 PCs I currently have are full of samsung (about 3 per PC), and not a single failure.
Edit: I know the conner-seagate, quantum-maxtor, IBM-hitachi links, just saying I owned the earlier and the newer versions. Now seagate got samsung and WD got hitachi, it's...

Re: Choosing a soldering station
Did some more searching and found a local retailer anyway. An extra $50 over DX, but worth it as higher chance it's genuine and I won't have to wait weeks for it to get here.
I can live with paying and extra $50 (and free postage from them too), for genuine with warranty etc.
Local people need jobs I guess as well.
Well I went off deal extreme because they charge too much for some things, so they taking the piss and making huge profits.
There was an electrcians insulated screwdriver set on there for $55....Last edited by paul_h; 04-26-2012, 12:01 AM.

Re: Choosing a soldering station
OK, thanks for the info about the fluke 17b, maybe it is genuine.
So I will buy the hakko fx888 from them as it saves me carrying around a step down transformer everywhere.
LOL

Re: Netcomm NB6 Routers - Bad G-Luxon
Yeah, I'm retarded. Sorry, it is an AC wallwart with 15VAC out of it, so used to testing DC ones.
I'm not crazy after all power wasn't coming from thin air, it's just that I am an idiot sometimes.

Re: Choosing a soldering station
I think everything at deal extreme is a fake though.
I took a gamble on the fluke 17b multimeter as a back up / home meter. i don't know if its supposed to be that slow? it's acurate compared to my old 87 iii, but takes half a second or longer to get a reading? My mention of that in a review was moderated and not put up there. Plus nearly every battery they sell with a name brand has poor results compared to legit ones.
I'd rather buy from amazon as I already have a step down transformer for cordless tools I buy from the US....

Re: Choosing a soldering station
Hi, I'm looking for a budget soldering station as well. Around here in Australia everything under $100 is chinese junk, and name brands like weller or hakko start at $200+ here.
I know that both the wes51 and hakko fx888 are on amazon for about $85, and so far I checked the weller, and they will ship it to me for $16, so that one is about $100 delivered.
I don't know if they will ship the hakko though, haven't looked into it too much yet, as it's not a direct amazon sale, but they are just the agent so possibly not.
But before...Last edited by paul_h; 04-25-2012, 04:55 AM.

Re: Netcomm NB6 Routers - Bad G-Luxon
I can't connect with a pc at the IP address 198.182.1.1 i could before.
Cap polarity is fine.
I think I did a bad solder job with my old 30W iron though, really hard to desolder the original caps.
So I'm looking at getting a decent soldering station.
Most here are $200, but I noticed I can get a weller DES51 solder station from US amazon shipped to australia for $100.
Is it worth it as $100 is the max I can spend, and I need to recap a PC mobo soon anyway so I'm looking to upgrade the iron anyway....Last edited by paul_h; 04-25-2012, 04:35 AM.

Re: Netcomm NB6 Routers - Bad G-Luxon
I had a look in the shed as I have heaps of old PCBs for fridges and a/cs. they had a ton of 25v caps on them, all rubycon yxf (so at least one electronics industry has decent caps, sharp refrigerators and daikin a/cs had nihicon)
I had a go soldering them in but modem now dead. It turns on, all lights that should be on are on, but can't connect over ethernet.
Do you think it's because the yxf is too out of spec or that I probably fried something heating it up so long to try melt the lead free solder - never had much luck with that?...Last edited by paul_h; 04-25-2012, 01:19 AM.

Re: Netcomm NB6 Routers - Bad G-Luxon
I checked voltage at the caps to the input ground from the 12v external plug transformer, (and I didn't know where else to check to).
It's 9V at the caps.

Re: Bad caps nearly killed my central HVAC unit.. and they have costed me $$$'s
I repair a/cs, and this is the most common break down. I replace at least 4 per week in summer.
Especially those 2 way caps that do the fan and the compressor. Mostly LG have them here, and lucky to last 5 years, but carrier have them too.
Most chinese and japanese fixed speed a/cs we have here always have separate caps for fan and compressor.
But no matter what brand it is, if it has a chinese capacitor (in vege oil), lucky to last 5 years. Every no name brand has them,...Last edited by paul_h; 04-24-2012, 06:23 AM.

Re: Netcomm NB6 Routers - Bad G-Luxon
Bumping the thread because the OP seems still active, and is in Australia too.
I've got the same problem with my netcomm nb6plus4W modem/router/WiFi
It has a different board layout though.
Where most of your caps are, I just have one single 12x15mm 25V 2200uF g-lux SM
And where your Linkcom chip is, mine has 3 caps bunched together
8x15mm 25v 1000uf g-lux ?? cap
10x15mm 25v 1000uF teapo SC cap
10x15mm 25v 2200 g-lux SM cap
I've had no luck finding anyone selling caps only...

Re: Aywun PSUs. Anyone here heard of them?
Do you have heaps of p3s at work?
The design is pretty bad for modern 12V systems is it not?
28A on the 5V rail, the 12V rail split to 15A and 7A.
Does it really have two 12V rails? If so why when the 12V output is so low?...

Re: Oh No! AMD adopts Intel's pinless design
I wasn't refering to the general price of components, but to current AMD vs Intel pricing. IE Intel are making them cheaper now, but still cost more than AMD. And if AMD went to a pinless design, they probably wouldn't reduce there price any, but we would have to pay more for mobos I expect....

Re: Oh No! AMD adopts Intel's pinless design
Where are the savings to the consumer? AMD with CPU pins are still cheaper than intel right now.
So drops CPU manufacturing price, but no savings passed on, Increases mobo manufacturing price, increased cost passed on
lose/lose for the consumer.
I just bought a AM3 system, so won't be upgrading for 3-4 years from now, so I'm right in the mean time.

Re: ICE ICE baby(low temperature topic)
Yeah the GB 6vxd7 was the mobo I had. Was OK for the most part, but a little funny.
One of the caps near the RAM was swollen, one of the caps between the PCI slots was too.
It was me first attempt at a recap, but ever since I went near it with a soldering iron, it hasn't posted or worked properly so I killed it more or less.
Just before I killed it I bought 1.5GB SDRAM and 1Ghz CPUs (only had 866mhz CPUs and 756MB RAM before), what a waste.

Re: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - WOW!
I'm waiting to try out linux again. I did have an old PC (nforce 4 4400+, so still decent) running Mint, but it died.
I built a new PC that's my gaming and windows box, and I have a nofrce3 4200+ that would make a perfect 'nix box because there's no windows drivers for it after XP anyway!
But I use that for work, and prefer to use some software on it that's not available on
linux and I've tried every alternative, they're all crap (was testing with the NF4 system before it died).
So not making the move until I play...

Re: List of Bad Cap Manufacturers
So I gather this rule is no longer in effect?
Interesting that teapo and OST is on the list (which some major PSU suppliers use), but fcon is not, which is used by even cheaper PSU manufacturers.
IE antec for the the former, huntkey for the latter....

Re: Shenzhen Chi Yuan Industrial Co Ltd?
But of a bump in this old thread because it seems now like huntkey have revised their rating for PSU output W.
They are now selling 600W PSUs as 550W. I guess 80+ ratings have made them take the step to stop over-rating their PSUs.
What's more the PSU seems to be able to put out 650W.
But of grave digging sorry, but I noticed this review: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Huntkey-Jumper-550-Power-Supply-Review/989/6 and was serching BC for fcon brand caps, to see if the huntkey 550w jumper was...Last edited by paul_h; 06-22-2010, 02:35 AM.

Yeah, like I said, the dual p3 with some nice HSFs on it looked cool.
