    Can I substitute....

    I have 4 bad Nichicon caps to replace on an old Compaq system. This will be my first recap and I have a newb questions which I hope you will be able to help me out with.

    The caps that need to be replaced are 2200uF 6.3V by Nichicon. All these are 10mm x 20mm. Should I try to replace them with identical Nichicon ones or the brand doesn't matter?
    I found 1 local place which has Nichicon 2200uF 6.3 but they are 8mm x 20mm. Can I use these instead of the 10mm x 20mm?

    Brand doesn't necessarily matter. You want a reliable brand, but each brand has different series, and the specs for each can vary.

    What series are the original Nichicon caps? Nichicon uses 2 letters for their series, usually. They are usually marked with the series and tolerance. For example, nichicon HD are marked HD(M). HD is the series. M is the tolerance, which is 20%. If you can share the series, someone can chime in and advise some suitable replacements.

      replace ALL bad brand caps. that way:

      1. if any have dried and failed that way, you're covered

      2. if any more were to fail, it is already fixed.

        Is this by any chance a small form factor type Compaq? I have one with 4 bad caps, but haven't gotten around to ordering replacements yet. Mine are Nichicon caps. HM(M) if I recall correctly. See my thread called

          The series are HM(M). And, yes this is a small form Compaq Evo.

          The part number which i'm able to pick up locally is UHM0J222MPD6 -> thats for the 8mm x 20mm

          The originals are UHM0J222MPD (10mm x 200mm)

            I have also found some Panasonic caps.

            Can I use this Panasonic Cap as a replacement? ECA-0JM222

              No. Panasonic are reliable caps, but this particular series isn't good enough. The series is only rated at 85°C, and doesn't appear to be low ESR. You need 105°C and Ultra low ESR caps.

              Nichicon HM in 8mm are also not good enough. They are smaller size, so they will have higher ESR and lower ripple current. Motherboard capacitors are a bit of a specialized item, and many people have trouble finding a local source.

              The owner of the site sells suitable replacements, so that's an option. I order from Topcat all the time, highly recommended. He sells Rubycon MBZ which is an excellent replacement for HM:

              Replace all the HM caps, not just the failed ones. HM caps had a manufacturing defect that was corrected by 2005. Anything before that is suspect.

                He's right.
                Those Panasonic don't have low enough ESR.

                All these are good replacements [Check diameter]:
                Rubycon MBZ or MCZ
                Sanyo WG [Sanyo is now Suncon, series is still WG]
                Panasonic FL or FJ
                Nichicon HM or HN [with date code 2005 or newer - 2001 thru 2004 were bad]

                  And yes, replace all the HM even if they aren't bloated yet.

                    +2. I've dealt with those boards and they're like the Dell SFF models. They cook the caps to death. I was 'gifted' with 4 D510 SFF's and all had to be recapped to operate. I used Panasonic FC and FM for replacements, 100uf and larger.
                    Stupidity should be a crime, especially for drivers. I have NO patience for them.

                      In so far as ESR.........

                      FC is under rated except for maybe the caps 330uF and under.
                      [Some boards 470uF and under.]


                      FM might be okay in some places but are under rated at least for Vcore and RAM.
                      The 2200uF 6.3V appear to be in Vcore.

                      It will probably at least work for a while but you are running with excess noise in the power plane and you risk poor performance, possibly loosing data and/or overheating MOSFETS.
