Best Android phone?

My motorola Q is on its last legs. I want to get a new phone.

I have a CDMA carrier and I'd like to get one of the HTC phones which run or can be flashed to android.
Whats the most bang for the buck? I want to get used and not carrier subsidized.

I'm going to modify the software anyway.

Any phone with AGPS is transmitting your location back to the tower right now.
