Using electronics power supply as laptop universal psu

    Like, power supplies like this

    https://www.amazon.com/Variable-Digi..._df_B07X2VZSL9

And wire it with a wire and tip from this

    https://www.amazon.com/Universal-Lap.../dp/B07DNWSSMC

Or would the dc be too dirty for something like a laptop that requires serious filtering from it's adapters?

I just wish universal power adapters came im larger sizes for techs to troubleshoot laptops of all sizes, even high wattage gaming ones

Maybe I could put a high ripple cap in line to smooth the dc out

Maybe just...get a 280w adapter for a gaming laptop and split the universal wire with all those nice tips into it? Of course, the smaller size wire from the 120w adapter will probably heat up if I'm using the full 280w

    Ideas?

those bench supplies are much better than the laptop bricks, you can use one - but you need to get the matching cable for the laptop.

the problem with most clone-cables is the wires are too thin, and they ususally dont have the "one-wire" memory chip used to tell the laptop that it's the right charger. (dell/hp mostly)

of course if you have a faulty charger to recover the cable and possible memory chip then no issues.

I use my bench power supply for laptops all the time.
If you use it on Dell or HP then it won't charge the laptop but it will power it on.
I have 19v 6300A Toshiba adapter with the standard tip (5.5x2.5) , these adapters plug into them https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000253125083.html

Yup, I do this too. With my scope, my variable volt bench supply output is far cleaner than any brick or even consumer-grade ATX PSU. The server grade ATX's OTOH tend to have very clean outputs....but I digress.

If you have a laptop without a brick, you absolutely can power them up with a bench supply, you just need to know the voltage (most are 19v)....but like Diif said, some HP's and Dell's wont charge (always the 3-wire fatty plugs I've noticed).

Yes it is super useful to run a laptop from a bench power supply when troubleshooting.
Because you will also have the ability to set sensible current limits to prevent stuff from blowing up.
And a built in power meter that tells you if any component you replaced improved things.
            Good example here: https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showpo...9&postcount=17

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?
              by Tynan Dill
I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

              Assuming...

Hi, Can we use SMPS Bench Power Supply for Laptop troubleshooting?
              by shamsudeen
Hi all, I just need to know that, can i use SMPS type power supply to test and short circuit detection on a laptop motherboard?
I saw 95% of repair guys are using only Linear bench power supply. linear bench power supply is pricy, thats why i planned to get one SMPS supply.

i know that in linear power supply the noise will be very low comparing to SMPS supply....

Desoldering gun station modified to use a 18 volt @ 20 amp switching power supply
              by sam_sam_sam
I have wanting to do this project for quite sometime now and I finally found a switching power supply that will work on this desoldering gun station ZD-915 that the original switching power supply took a shit and just was not worth trying to fix it because this switching power is not quite big enough to handle the heater element and the vacuum pump

One note when I tested the switching power supply and the voltage control board I noticed that this desoldering gun heat up much faster than the original switching power supply which I was really surprised by to the point that I might buy...
