    DLT drive write errors.

I bought this internal VS160 DLT drive (rebadged as a Tandberg Data VS160) almost a month ago and when I first got it, I installed it, loaded the drivers and ran a backup and it went off without a single hitch. I then set the server to run a complete system backup cycle in the first of every month and left it alone.
So the first comes around and when I get back from work I check it and...I got a read error about four minutes into the backup.
I tried again. Went a little further and then gave a read error.
I then tried another tape. It again gave a read error at another random time.
I assumed that while the CLEAN light was not on that it might still be dirty so I loaded the cleaning cartridge in and ran a cycle and then tried another new tape (so now I'm on my third VS160 tape) and again, I get a read error at a random time.
It's not having issues with any particular files and between the first time I used it and now it had been in the server (which run 24/7) with a tape loaded in it, doing absolutely nothing. I see no reason at all why I should be having this unless the tape I had loaded got stuck to the head and there's residue on it that teh cleaning tape did not remove or something. It makes no sense at all and so long as I have no way to back my system up, all my files I added/edited since the last backup are at risk of being lost (and these drives are already almost 5+ years old and have been running non stop for probably their whole life).

Blow out the innards with compressed air and clean the tape head with a foam q tip dipped in alcohol.

      Maybe somethings gummed on there?

Want to rule out hardware before software.

Does the cleaning tape accept alcohol through a hole or is it a dry cleaning tape?

After 5 years I'm surprised there's still any life at all left in the read/write heads.

I had a funny issue when i upgraded the tape drive in our old domain controller from a HP DAT drive to a HP LTO-1 drive.. I accidently connected the new SCSI cable that came with it, that had LVD termination, to the place where the old tape drive was connected which was an SE connector.. Funnily enough, it would detect the tape drive, and even read data correctly, but writing it hated.. After i moved the cable to the LVD connector, it worked perfectly..

What kind of SCSI card are you using, and with which OS???

                iirc the vs160 is lvd.

So the answer is an alcohol soaked q-tip possibly?
I'll haee to go buy more q-tips an rubbing alcohol but I'll give that a try.
How could the heads be worn out?
I have seen QIC-150 drives still in use that still run fine and they are WAY beyond their prime.

                    Hmm. That's odd.
I was forced to reboot the server last night and after that was done I tried again for the heck of it and it completed the backup with no problems.
I guess something on the bus had to be reset.
