    usb to parallel port converters

    Ok here's the situation. I've got a customer with a label printer that has software from 1996. They were dead-set against upgrading their old windows 95 computer... until now. So they're getting a new laptop.

    Anyway, they've got this label printer that has a security device on LPT1, an actual hard wired parallel port on their old Windows 95 based computer.

    Obviously their new laptop doesn't have a parallel port. So I need to know, who makes a usb to parallel port adapter that actually gives you an LPT port in Windows XP, not their "USB printing support" port that those type of adapters usually install.

    I need to know this rather quickly as well. I will be forever grateful for any help you may be able to provide.

    there are PCMCIA cards that have a real LPT controller. just a few though... the majority just emulates a port.
    no idea about expresscards.

    maybe via docking station.

    a while ago i came across a diy converter. i think they used an atmega8 and a few other components. programming involved, so probably no easy fix. i think it was called USB2LPT.

    maybe FTDI has some chip.

    maybe there's a crack...? as long as they have the dongle, it *should* be okay.

        I had a similar situation and used a print server with a lpt port. Just print through the router to the print server. A router and print server can be had for little expense and is expandable. HTH.
        Why throw it away? I might need it in the next 40 years. Duh!

          Unfortunately acstech is not looking for a printing device.

          Chances are a docking station will provide what you want. Hopefully!

              just did a quick search on amazon and there actually are cards (not few) that provide a full parallel port.

                  I've been down this road. Dead end.

                  HP software refuses to load on these devices.
                  It is neither USB nor LPT connected, and the software chokes.

                  Be sure to test this in advance if you can.
