    DVDs on HDDs

I have a few DVDs which I really like to watch without having to locate the discs every single time to watch some movies in the car on my laptop. Is there any way I can copy an entire DVD to my hard drive and watch it? Are there any special programs I need to copy a DVD to my hard drive to watch? So far I have tried the "copy and paste" files technique but everything is all messy and I don't even know which file to click on to play the movie I want to watch.

    Thanks.

yeah i would use smartripper to copy all the files (and decrypt)
then i would use dvdshrink to reduce the size by ripping just the movie, one language and one audio

some new movies have protection that requires other software though

dvd decrypter in file mode will produce one big vob file that you open with dvd player u use.
if your player doesn't like it, use mpclassic.

DVD Fab Platinum also works very well for this.

I use it to rip working copies of movies the grand kids (roughly) handle. I keep the masters out of their reach. For some reason, I seem to be the only one in the family who understands that DVDs are actually fragile and should be handled delicately.

I use DVD decrypter, and media player classic with the Full Klite codec pack, just go to open, then go to where the dvd was ripped to and select all the files, and it automatically arranges them and plays them like it should.

When i lazy, i just copy the entire disc to .iso with programs like alcohol 120%. Then u can use a virtual drive to load it from hdd.

You could mount the ISO's, or look up "Handbrake". It makes some pretty good DivX rips, or H.264 if you prefer. It's free.

Yeah, My brother used to use Alcohol 120% to make iso files. But at the moment, I've been using DVD decrypter and it seems to work well.

                Thanks.

                  Re: DVDs on HDDs

FYI: to create an iso image file of a disk in Linux, use this command.
                  Code:
                  dd if=/dev/dvd of=DvdName.iso
That's it! No program to purchase and install, and no Micro$oft!

                    Hi, Paul.
I'm always interested in learning about GPL software, but I don't think dd will do. I may be wrong, but I doubt dd can remove the copy protection of commercial dvd movies.

                      Re: DVDs on HDDs

I thought that the idea for the iso image was to copy the disk, not rip it.

I admit to not playing a lot of commercial DVDs in Linux. But if you are just playing the DVD or iso, why would you need to remove the copy protection? There are two methods to do this, anyway.

The two apps mentioned a lot are dvd::rip and k9copy.

                      Hope that helps.

Thanks, Paul. I was not aware of the possibility of copying the image preserving the copy protection. I thought stripping the encryption was obligatory.
                        I will look into k9copy.

First, I see that my first link is bad, so here is the corrected link:
                          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libdvdcss

I don't actually have a DVD with copy protection, so I can't confirm if it works. I have copied Linux installation DVDs this way. Since it is making an image file of the entire disk, it should work (in theory).

                            Re: DVDs on HDDs

A bit nibbler is usually required to make exact clone copies of protected software. This is a bit-to-bit precise copy of the disk structure. It cares nothing about file systems, partition info, etc. All it does is duplicate the bit structure exactly. This gives you an exact copy of the source, and copy protection be damned.
