    Re: How does this happen?

again... put the entire install folder onto a FAT/FAT32 partition (system partition should be fine, unless you want to delete it first for a clean setup). boot into DOS (ME still has that option IIRC) and load setup from dos. - run winnt.exe in the i386 folder.

Windows ME doesn't support real DOS mode so I can't access DOS in the startup menu.

      Thanks.

the only drawback is, that the "safe mode" option when pressing F8 before ME boots disappears.. but i think thats not important in this case as you're nuking ME anyways

edit: crappy google-translated article about that patch

          @Stevo

Here´s another thing you could try:
          http://alter.org.ua/en/soft/win/uni_ata
It's an universal ATA driver for Windows NT3.51/NT4/2000/XP with PATA/SATA support

          Under "features" it reads:
          - no reinstall required when migrating to different IDE controller or motherboard.

So I guess it woud allow you to:
          - transplant the hdd to a laptop with a functional cdrom drive
          - install Win2k
          - then transplant the HDD to the original laptop

Be advised I didn't try the driver out.

            umm... my mistake.
here's the fix from scenics's link in english:
            http://www.infoworld.com/articles/op...ivingston.html

no usb boot support either? that sucks.
fascinating... a tiny problem and no easy workaround.

              Re: How does this happen?

Thanks anyway guys, but I've found a workaround to the issue and installed Windows XP instead. I had to take the HDD out of the Inspiron and put it into my Toshiba Satellite. Then installed Windows XP and since this was XP SP1, the IDE controller on the Toshiba laptop was installed with standrard windows drivers, all I had to do was change the "Computer" section of the device manger from "ACPI multiproccessor PC" to "Standard PC" and off I went.
I know that 128MB of RAM for XP is kinda yuck (OK for now I guess) , but I'm hoping to get another stick of 256MB PC133 SODIMM SDRAM off eBay when I can get some cash.

              Thanks.

                Re: How does this happen?

be careful with those 256MB SO-DIMM SD-RAM sticks!

most older laptops (especially with intel BX chipset) do not support 256MB sticks with 8 chips.

i found that out the hard way.. now i've bought a 16-chip 256MB stick and it works fine...but its freakin expensive :/

                http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....m=160287631347

got it for 21€ from another seller... but its still expensive.. (compared to those 8-chip 256MB sticks for 8,99€ (= about 17,32 AU$))

if this laptop has 2 slots i'd rather get 2x128MB sticks... much better for your wallet...

                  Re: How does this happen?

If you switch motherboards you have to do a repair install, and slipstream the drivers , especially for the disk.
Look for other posts here about doing that.

                    Re: How does this happen?

Bleh. I decided to get rid of Windows XP and install Windows 2000. So far I guess everything is OK. It's faster than XP and at the moment I have about 70MB of RAM that is free compared to 40 something with Windows XP. What I want to know now is would it be worth it to get extra ram for my laptop to Windows 2000 more efficiently? or is 128MB more than enough for Windows 2000?

                    Thanks.

                      Re: How does this happen?

W2k has very noticeable improvements with more RAM until you hit about 384MB and then smaller (but still noticeable) improvement until you hit the 512Mb mark.
After that you get into diminishing returns.
It does depend a lot on what you are running on it.

                        Re: How does this happen?

                        agree with pcbonez.

i've had 128MB in my toshiba PIII 600MHz laptop running win2k.
was ok at first, but... you know... a little app here and there and the swapping began (which slowed everything extremely down, as the HDD is only on ATA33)

really depends on what you wanna do with it.

another 128MB stick (or two) wouldn't hurt. dunno about how many RAM slots your dell has.
256MB sticks are too expensive IMHO.. (see post #47)

At the moment my Dell has 2 RAM slots and both are occupied with 64MB sticks. As for the hard drive, I'm not sure if I'm using an ATA-33 or something else drive? My HDD is a Toshiba 2018GAS 20GB HDD.

                          Thanks.

                            Re: How does this happen?

hmm.. 2x128MB would fit and would be noticable speed-wise.

for that ATA33 stuff...: my Toshiba is based on the old but famous intel BX chipset. its rock solid, but the bottleneck is its IDE controller, as it only supports ATA33 (33MB/s) max.
the HDD i'm using (20GB IBM Travelstar 40GS Series) is capable of ATA100.
so... if you're running out of RAM (which is likely with 128MB) the swapping nightmare through the chipset's ATA33 bottleneck to the HDD begins... :/

                            hmm... thats exactly the same 16Chip 256MB RAM i bought... but i paid 21€ (about 42.70 AU$) whilst this one is "only" 14.70€ (29.90 AU$) o.O
